He was sent to Rajasthan’s Longewala station in the Thar desert in Jaisalmer. He was familiar with the geographical location because of his hometown.
During the Indo-Pak conflict of 1971, he led a small BSF unit of 6-7 men, along with 120 soldiers from the 23rd Punjab Regiment. He defeated his opponents with his determination and tactics. Upon realizing that one of the officers of the 23rd Punjab Regiment was dead, he grabbed his light machine gun and engaged the attackers. He then won the battle because of his bravery.
