He started his career in May 2008 as a special correspondent/cricket writer for India’s leading national daily, The Indian Express. Early in his career, he would write about various sports. His first article was about chess. Within a year, however, Sundaresan was covering the Indian cricket team, which eventually became his area of expertise. He will travel extensively to cover cricket series around the world. He worked for The Indian Express for over 10.5 years before moving to Adelaide, Australia, with his wife in December 2018. There he served as Cricbuzz’s Australian reporter and senior writer. In 2019, he began umpiring with the South Australian Cricket Association. He also serves as a cricket commentator for Melbourne sports radio station SEN Radio.
In 2018, he wrote the biography of Indian cricket icon MS Dhoni, The Dhoni Touch: Unraveling the Enigma that is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, which became a national bestseller in India.

In 2023, Bharat Sundaresan co-authored the book “The Miracle Worker – The Greatest Epic of Indian Cricket” with Gaurav Joshi.

- Bharat Sundaresan moved to Adelaide when his wife Isha decided to attend the city’s Flinders University. He first visited Adelaide to cover the Indian cricket team during the 2014/15 Border-Gavaskar series.
- In an interview, he revealed that Dhoni Touch (2018) was created while sitting on The Grind at The Parade in Norwood, South Australia.
- In 2013, Bharat Sundaresan won the Red Ink Awards for Best Sports Feature for his article titled “The one who dropped the ball”, which targeted cricketer Anil Anil Gurav. In the article, Sundaresan tells the harrowing story of how Gurav found himself trapped in the world of alcohol and crime. Sundaresan drew parallels between the careers of Gurav and Sachin Tendulkar, even though the two shared the same cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar.
- In 2022, he made headlines for calling for Australian cricket to end racism against people of colour. Writing in Australian daily The Age, he said that despite being a well-known cricket writer, his credentials were still being questioned by venue security staff.
