Bill Gates remains committed to giving away his money and can’t wait to be off the list of the world’s richest people.
The 68-year-old Microsoft co-founder — who has long pledged to give most of his fortune to solving social problems — told CNN on Tuesday that he expects to meet his goal in about 20 years and is currently giving away money at a rate of $9 billion a year.
“I have more than enough money for my own consumption,” Gates said. “I’m going to push myself to get off the list and I’ll be proud when I’m completely off.”
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gates is currently listed as the fourth richest person in the world with a net worth of $141 billion.

The tech entrepreneur, ex-wife Melinda French Gates and Warren Buffett are the creators of The Giving Pledge, which is described on its website as “an open invitation for billionaires, or those who would otherwise not give, to publicly commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy either life or in the will.”
In July 2022, Gates said he plans to give “almost all” of his wealth The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, according to a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
His message came as the foundation unveiled a new plan to increase annual spending “from nearly $6 billion to $9 billion a year by 2026.”
“I have an obligation to return my resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact on reducing suffering and improving lives,” Gates wrote on the social media platform at the time.

In a blog post shared the same day, Gates said he plans to keep enough money only for “what I spend on myself and my family.” He also said that he plans to continue investing and giving money to various causes.
“In general, I expect that work in these areas will make money, which will also go to foundations,” he noted, expressing hope that “at this point, others in positions of great wealth and privilege will also step forward.” ”
