Billie Eilish Says an Older Version of 'Birds of a Feather' Was Worked on in the Back of an SUV in Brazil

For Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, creativity flourishes in unlikely places.

During the performance on Wednesday, September 4 at Jimmy Kimmel Live!the Grammy winner shared a never-before-seen video of her and Finneas working out in the back of an SUV.

“This is a video I took on my phone in the back of an SUV in Brazil on my way to a show a year and a half ago,” Eilish, 22, told the host. “This is a perfectly normal thing for me and Finneas. We always find ourselves working in the most random places.”

She added: “It’s fun because it’s so casual and normal and we were in the back of this car and it’s Finneas’ laptop.”

In the video, Eilish and Finneas, 27, work on an older version of “Birds of a Feather,” which is on her latest studio album Hit me hard and soft. Eilish can be heard singing and giving Finneas advice before his laptop beeps and he closes it in disappointment.

Billie Eilish and Finneas had a ‘big fight’ while working on a new album Hit me hard and soft

“That song was never good … there are so many different versions,” the “Ocean Eyes” singer said. “It’s such an old version of the song that I don’t really remember, and it sounds so different and it’s really amazing to see how far the song has come.”

When Kimmel, 56, asked if she liked the older version of the song better than the one she released, Eilish said it’s “almost always horribly awful.”

Eilish — who was recently named Spotify’s most streamed artist of the month — and Finneas opened up about making it Hit me hard and soft in the past. During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in May, the duo talked about the “big fight” they had over the LP’s “context and subject matter.”

“We were writing these fragments of things and I felt…I’ve been proven wrong over and over again, but this was the problem I was in that night. I said, ‘Thematically, I’m not being led into what you’re actually feeling and I think there are real guards,’ said Finneas.

He added of the songwriting process: “A lot of times in life you go through things that you’re going to write about later. And that must have happened with Billie at that point where I’d be like, ‘What’s this about?’ And she’d say, ‘Nothing.’ .”

Eilish chimed in and noted that her brother’s reaction at the time scared her, especially when he said, “I don’t like doing this anymore. I don’t want to write music right now.”

Billie Eilish reacts to becoming Spotify’s artist of the month: ‘I really can’t believe it’

“I was like, ‘[I] i hate making music [I] i don’t want to fail [I] I don’t like doing it,'” the singer said. “It’s frustrating. It’s irritating. I love that I did it. I love performing it. I love it when it’s good, but I’ve always really struggled with the process.”

She then realized she was “finally enjoying the process” when Finneas suddenly became disinterested.

“It was very interesting because I saw myself in it. I said, ‘I’ve felt that way and you’ve always been what moves the ship, and now you feel that way. What does that mean for us? And what are we going to do?'”

Eilish released Hit me hard and soft May 17.
