Bindyarani Devi is an Indian weightlifter who won the silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (Birmingham) with a total lift of 202kg, snatch 86kg and clean and jerk 116kg .

Wiki/Biography

Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam was born on Wednesday, January 27, 1999 (age 23 years; as of 2022) and she lives in Langol Ningthou Leikai, Imphal, Manipur. She started her sports career as a taekwondo athlete and competed in taekwondo competitions from 2008 to 2012. However, she gave up kickboxing in 2013 and started weightlifting after realizing that her short stature was well-suited for the sport. Like Manipuri weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, famous for winning a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Bindiyalani is also training at the SAI North East Regional Center in Imphal. Three years later, she was selected for training at the National Center of Excellence (NCOE) in Imphaltaquil. Later, she trained under the guidance of Vijay Sharma at the National Weightlifting Camp in Patiala. She made her weightlifting debut at the 2016 IWLF Youth National Championships (Bhubaneswar) in the 53kg category.

Parents and siblings

Her father, Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, was a farmer and ran a grocery store. Her mother, S. Ibemcha Devi, is a priest and works as a domestic help in the community in Imphal. She has two siblings. Her brother’s name is Sorohaybham Suraj Singh.

  • Bindyarani is often referred to as Mirabai 2.0 as he shares the same trajectory as Manipuri weightlifter Mirabai Chanu.
  • Although many media consider Mirabai Chanu to be Bindyarani’s idol, she revealed in an interview that she has idolized Kunjarani Devi since her childhood. Kunjarani Devi from Imphal is the most decorated female weightlifter in India. Bindyarani Devi said in an interview,

    Although we are from the same state and from a town near Imphal, I have no connection with Mirabai Chanu. I didn’t follow her into weightlifting. I am inspired by Kunjarani Devi. “

  • When Bindyarani Devi first arrived at the NIS Patiala national training camp in 2019, she didn’t have a pair of weightlifting shoes. Later, Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu came to her aid and gifted her training shoes.
