About Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a very popular first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and Raven Software and published by Activision. It was released worldwide on November 13, 2020 on multiple gaming platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

As the sixth part of the Black Ops series and the seventeenth installment of the Call of Duty franchise as a whole, this game is a collaboration between two well-known development studios.

The game’s interesting campaign is set in the early 1980s, during the Cold War, between the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Players take on the role of “Bell”, recruited by CIA officer Russell Adler to join a multinational task force dedicated to stopping a Soviet spy named Perseus. Perseus aims to undermine the United States and tip the scales in favor of the Soviet Union.

During the campaign, players have the opportunity to meet familiar characters from the Black Ops series, including Alex Mason, Frank Woods and Jason Hudson. Multiplayer introduces new game modes, map dynamics and elements, expanding the design choices featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Black Ops Cold War also implements a seasonal content system similar to Modern Warfare, which includes a battle pass and regular additions of free maps and weapons with each new season.

Originally, the game was developed by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games as a standalone title, separate from the Black Ops sub-series. However, due to development disagreements between the two teams, Treyarch took over the project in 2019, with Raven joining as co-developers.

The marketing campaign for Black Ops Cold War began in August 2020, using various strategies such as sending slide projectors to content creators, engaging fans in online puzzle-solving activities, and introducing a website depicting historical events of the Cold War. In October 2020, a public multiplayer beta also became available, allowing players to get a taste of the game before its official release.

Black Ops Cold War was generally well received by critics, praising its campaign, multiplayer and zombie experience. However, the game faced some criticism due to technical issues and a perceived lack of innovation. Despite this, it achieved remarkable commercial success, becoming the best-selling game of 2020 in the United States.

Black Ops Cold War game

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign, players have the opportunity to create a custom character, called “Bell”. They can choose their intelligence agency, skin color, nationality, and gender, as well as choose different personality traits that offer in-game perks. This sequel to the game reintroduces the feature of multiple endings, which are determined by the choices players make during the campaign.

multiplayer game:

Black Ops Cold War multiplayer mode introduces a mix of new and familiar game modes, accompanied by maps designed for the traditional 6v6 format and larger 12v12 battles. Additionally, a new game mode called “Fireteam” has been introduced, which allows for intense combat with up to 40 players. The game retains the Create-a-Class system from Modern Warfare, with a few notable changes. Field upgrades are now included as part of the class fill, and players can choose one wildcard from four options: Gunfighter (provides up to 8 primary weapon perks), Perk Greed (provides 2 perks from each category for a total of 6 useful perks), Danger Close (equip double grenade) or Lawbreaker (allows to mix and match any type of weapon/perk in any slot). Similar to Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War supports cross-platform play and cross-platform progression. A subsequent update integrates the multiplayer progression system with Call of Duty: Warzone, resulting in a unique tier system across Cold War, Warzone, and Modern Warfare. In addition, Cold War Operators and Weapons characters are included in Warzones along with Modern Warfare Operators and Weapons, although the multiplayer modes remain separate and do not share Operators and Weapons.

zombies:

The Zombies mode in Black Ops Cold War introduces a new story called “Dark Ether”, which expands on the original Ether story concluded in Black Ops 4 while remaining connected to the main story of the campaign. Instead of playing as predefined characters, players take on the roles of Operator characters from Multiplayer as part of the CIA’s response team known as “Requiem”. Progress from the multiplayer game carries over to Zombies, allowing players to use any weapon to start a zombie fight, along with Gunsmith, scores, and field upgrades. Familiar mechanics such as Wall Buys, Mystery Box, Pack-a-Punch and beloved perks from previous games return. For the first time in a Zombies game, players have the option to “evacuate” the map, entering a challenge wave with increased numbers of enemies they must survive before escaping. Collectibles are scattered throughout the game maps, allowing players to discover and follow the main story as they progress. The game includes a skill upgrade system, where players can upgrade weapons, perks, ammo mods, and field upgrades using Ether Crystals, a currency obtained by achieving certain rounds. An exclusive Onslaught mode has been introduced for PlayStation players until November 1, 2021. In this mode, played within multiplayer maps, up to 2 players defend areas surrounded by a dark aether orb, requiring zombie kills for power. Sufficient kills move the orb to new positions, forcing players to relocate or face death outside the orb’s protective zone. The second season update introduces “Outbreak”, a large-scale mode where players battle hordes of zombies and complete objectives in an open-world area, featuring locations from larger multiplayer modes.

Black Ops Cold War Plot

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War universe, the campaign is set in the early 1980s during the Cold War era. Players follow the story of Russell Adler, a Green Beret turned US CIA/SOG officer, as he leads a mission to thwart the international espionage threat known as Perseus.

The campaign draws inspiration from real events and takes players to locations as diverse as East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey and the Soviet KGB headquarters. Adler is joined by familiar Black Ops characters including Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson, as well as new allies like Lawrence Sims, Eleazar “Lazar” Azoulay, and Helen Park. Players take on the role of “The Bell,” a mysterious operative who assists Adler’s team throughout much of the campaign.

Mason and Belikov are also playable in certain parts. Perseus’ inner circle includes notable figures such as Arash Kadivar, Qasim Javadi, Anton Volkov, Major Vadim Rudnik and Robert Aldrich. Imran Zakhaev and Colonel Lev Kravchenko also appear.

In multiplayer mode, the season’s story spans from late 1983 to 1984 and focuses on Adler’s ongoing mission to investigate the resurgence of Perseus and his agents.

The main antagonist is Vikhor “Stitch” Kuzmin, who seeks revenge on Adler for personal reasons. Stitch’s allies and fellow Perseus operatives include Naga, Wraith, Knight, Jackal, Kitsune, and Fuze. NATO allies such as Zeyna Ossou, Wyatt “Bulldozer” Jones, Terrell Wolf, Karla Rivas, Jabari Salah and Colton “Stryker” Greenfield provide support to Adler and the CIA.

Captain Carver Butcher, the protagonist of the Call of Duty: Vanguard Seasonal Multiplayer Story, also appears in the final season of Cold War Multiplayer.

The Zombies mod, set in the late 1983 to 1985 Dark Ether storyline, continues the narrative elements from the previous Aether storyline.

Players join Requiem, a classified CIA task force, in their efforts to study and eliminate the growing undead threat.

The four-man strike team takes orders from CIA officer Grigory Weaver and works alongside Major Mackenzie Carver, Dr. Elizabeth Grey, Dr. Oskar Strauss, and Raptor One.

The team faces the Omega Group, led by Colonel Kravchenko, who is responsible for the new undead outbreak. Notable operatives of the Omega Group include Doctor William Peck, Doctor Alexander Valentin (also known as Angelika Vogel), Doctor Hugo Jager, and Commander Gorev.

Requiem is assisted by Samantha Maxis and Sergei Ravenov, while both factions interact with Kazimir Zykov, a Soviet engineer trapped in the Dark Ether dimension.

These characters and settings provide an immersive experience across the Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
