Blake Lively on Wearing Britney Spears' ‘Actual’ Dress to It Ends With Us Premiere: 'It Should Be in the Smithsonian' (Exclusive)

Blake Lively couldn’t believe she recreated the look of a music superstar during her latest stop at the It ends with us press tour.

Lively, 36, went all out for the film’s red carpet premiere in New York City on Tuesday, August 6, and paid tribute to Britney Spears by wearing a vintage Versace dress worn by the “Gimme More” singer in 2002.

“It’s Britney’s real dress,” Lively tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It should be in the Smithsonian or the Met. But I’m paying. I feel so lucky!”

Completely in keeping with the floral outfits she’s been wearing all summer – related to her character Lily Bloom and her flower shop in the film – the Versace dress includes several embellished flowers across her waist. The multicolored sequined dress features a one-shoulder halter neckline and a different cut across the bodice.

Vividly accessorized with rings from the Lorraine Schwartz fine jewelry line, each of which matched the colors of the dress, including vibrant pinks and pastel blues, and a pair of dangling earrings in the same colors. Her shoes were simple and she wore heels with iridescent straps.

Meanwhile, her glamorous look also influenced the colors of the dress. Lively sported a soft pink eyeshadow that matched her matte lipstick. She left her long blonde hair loose in waves that cascaded down her back.

Lively also shared a sweet message for the superstar singer on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday: “Today’s mood. The ultimate queen that makes us all want to glow and write and share our stories,” she wrote above a photo of Spears in a 2002 Versace ensemble.

“Britney, all of us millennials have a story to tell about a moment or year where you made us shine and inspire awe, strength, joy and tremendous hard work,” she added. “Thank you for your example and your contribution to women telling their stories.

Lively walked the red carpet with her husband Ryan Reynolds, who wore an olive-green suit with a white floral button-up — also a nod to Lively’s character. They were followed by the Reynolds Deadpool & Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman.

Since promotion for the film, based on Colleen Hoover’s book of the same name, began in June, Lively has been wearing flowers any way she can. She told PEOPLE while promoting her Blake Brown hair care line that she likes to dress methodically when promoting a project because it allows her to really get into character.

“I’m so excited that methodical dressing is such a thing now because years ago, when I Simple service, people said, ‘Why are you dressing like your character? Why are you in suits?’” Lively said, referring to her 2018 promotional tour for the Paul Feig film for which she just filmed the upcoming sequel. “And I was like, because we don’t have any marketing money to promote this movie. It’s a small film and the only thing people pay attention to in those field trip interviews are the fashion photos, so if I only wear men’s suits, people will say, ‘Why does she only wear suits?’ And then they’ll say, ‘Oh, because she’s in a movie and she’s wearing men’s suits.’ It’s a marketing trick we use to try to attract people to pay attention to our film. And it worked.”

Lively certainly has more of a floral look up her sleeve as a release It ends with us approaches. While she’s worn everything from mini dresses to floral print jeans and floral shorts to embroidered hats, there’s definitely something floral left in her closet to wear before the movie hits theaters on August 9.
