His aunt, Leah Davies, said on social media: “Our little world has been turned upside down in the past 12 hours. My nephew, my little Ant is fighting for his life.”
She added: “We love you Anthony Dodson and you are the strongest child I know. We need you, boy, like you wouldn’t believe.”
Today she wrote: “Our champion wins everything! Obstacles he encountered in the past 30 hours. He is an absolute warrior.
“We couldn’t be more proud of you Ant, we love you boy, me too, we’re sitting here waiting for you.
“I hope to wake him up today and see how he reacts. He is our little miracle and we are thrilled with how strong he is.”
Rachel Fitzgerald, another aunt, said it was the “worst phone call ever” when she was told her nephew had been stabbed.
She said she found out about the fight on the news and added: “It was my baby the whole time.”
Rachel said Anthony was ‘one of the kindest, loveliest guys you’ll ever meet’.
Another loved one said, “We believe in you so much […] you are as strong as an ox”.
She added that Anthony had a “heart of pure gold”.
Anthony, aged in his 20s, was found with stab wounds at around 5.30am on Wednesday, a Merseyside Police spokesman said.
He was discovered by patrols at the junction of Church Street and Whitechapel.
The officers gave him medical attention before he was taken to the hospital.
Two other men, both in their 20s, self-reported to the hospital with injuries, police said.
One was stabbed in the head and the other in the back.
Police said the injuries were believed to be related to a disturbance involving a large group of men on Victoria Street.
Tony Dodson has previously said he does not want his son to follow in his footsteps with a boxing career, but wants him to become a footballer.
He said: “I don’t really want to, but he is gifted, as I was. So I hope he can continue, progress, although I would like him to ditch the boxing gloves and take out the football boots.”
Dodson won his first 13 competitive matches before facing defeat to become British Champion in 2003.
Cllr Helen Bennett said: “Emergency CCTV, eyewitness and forensic inquiries are being carried out in the city center and a large area has been closed off as a result.
“There appears to have been a major disturbance in Victoria Street in which three people were injured.
“We know that there were people in the city center who may have witnessed the disorder or possibly helped the injured men, and we would ask them to come forward and talk to the police as soon as possible.
“Such incidents are unacceptable and we will do everything in our power to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”
