The 16-year-old high school student was going on a solo spearfishing expedition near the busy tourist town of Montego Bay, local police say.

He went missing on Monday, prompting a frantic search.

His mangled remains were found on Tuesday morning, and shocked witnesses told the Jamaica Observer that the teenager’s body was left badly mutilated in the attack.

Jahmara’s heartbroken father, Michael Reid, was on the beach when divers brought the body back to land.

The retired taxi driver said: “I can’t believe that he went to sea alone and that this is the outcome. It’s sad to know. I feel so bad.”

Michael says he warned his son about the dangers of spearfishing himself before the tragedy.

Fisherman Christopher Reynolds was with his grieving father on the beach along with a group of locals.

He says divers claimed to have seen a huge tiger shark in the water near where Jahmari’s body was found.

Locals tried to shoot the shark that they believe most likely attacked Jahmari.

Reynolds added: “All the fishermen went out there and, as they were diving to get it, they saw a big shark.

– They shot at him, but they didn’t catch him.

The tragic discovery marks only the fourth time an unprovoked shark attack has resulted in death in Jamaica, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Fritz Christie, chairman of the Falmouth Fisherfolks charity, said it was the first time wild beasts had been killed in Trelawny waters.

Locals believe the shark followed a cruise ship into the bay.

Fritz told local media: “What we have to do is make sure that when the ships come in, we look out for diving.

“A shark eats a man’s head, eats one of his arms [sic]. That’s crazy, man.”

Jahmari was a student at William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny.

He was supposed to return to school in September after the holidays.

It comes after a 15-year-old girl lost her leg in a shark attack after diving off the coast of Belize earlier this month.

Annabelle Carlson was airlifted to hospital after being bitten by a shark while on holiday.

What are tiger sharks?

TIGER sharks get their name from the black, vertical stripes that mostly appear on the young.

As these sharks develop, their lines fade and practically disappear, reports National Geographic.

Tiger sharks are one of only three species considered extremely dangerous to humans.

They account for almost all fatal encounters, along with bull sharks and great white sharks.

Unlike great white sharks, which are said to dislike the taste, the tiger shark is more likely to take a few bites from its body.

Tiger sharks are common in tropical and subtropical waters around the world.

The largest can reach sizes up to 25 feet in length and weigh more than 1,900 pounds.

They are notorious scavengers, with sharp, highly serrated teeth and powerful jaws capable of breaking through the shells of sea turtles and clams.

Tiger sharks are often harvested for their fins, skin and meat, and their livers contain a high concentration of vitamin A.

They have extremely low reintroduction rates and are classified as a near-threatened species.
