Earlier this week, a 6-year-old husky named after the Poison frontman gave a life-saving blood donation to a kitten battling flea-borne anemia at the Nebraska Humane Society, the facility said in a Facebook post.
After the story got back to Michaels, 60, he reached out to the Nebraska Humane Society and is now adopting a dog named after him.
“I couldn’t be more touched and honored to adopt Bret Michaels’ husky, knowing he gave blood to save a kitten’s life,” the rocker — who is currently on his Parti-Gras tour — told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement show. “I couldn’t work fast enough to adopt this husky and extend little Bret Jr.’s amazing quality of life.”

In its social media post, the Nebraska Humane Society detailed that the kitten was brought in as a stray along with two other cats.
Noting that they were “dirty, frostbitten and covered in fleas,” the facility wrote that they took care of the animals, but noted that one of the cats appeared “slightly disturbed” and was “wobbly, weak and lethargic.”
After the kitten was diagnosed with flea anemia, the Nebraska Humane Society realized that a blood transfusion needed to be done quickly, but they couldn’t wait for testing to be done to determine a suitable feline donor.
Instead, the organization knew that dog blood could be transfused into a cat, and they remembered that Bret Michaels the dog had had his blood work done just days before, making him a candidate for donation.

After the first round of transfusions, the kitten began to show signs of improvement, the Nebraska Humane Society said in a Facebook post.
Michaels’ decision to adopt a hero dog comes shortly after he lost his 14-year-old German shepherd, Phoenix, earlier this year.
“So this story has brought a smile back into my family’s life,” the musician tells PEOPLE. “I work diligently with my family and many people to save and improve the lives of many pets.”
“We have always donated to amazing pet drives and charities and will continue to do so [home] Bret Jr., who … has now found a loving family that includes our two rescue shepherds, Nova and Draco,” he adds.
