Bridget Jones 4: All About the Romantic Franchise's Next Installment

After eight years, Bridget Jones and Daniel Cleaver are returning to the big screen.

Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant are set to star in the film Bridget Jones 4, coming to theaters and airing in 2025.

“I love being in her shoes,” Zellweger said on Sirium XM’s The Jess Cagle Show 2022, when she was asked if she would ever return for a fourth role as Bridget Jones. “I mean, it makes me laugh, you know, every day on set the choices we have to make about how uncomfortable we can make her circumstances. It’s just fun.”

The film is the fourth in the series Bridget Jones franchise, all based on Helen Fielding’s books and newspaper columns about the adorably flawed and very human Jones navigating love and life.

First, Bridget Jones’s Diary, was released in 2001, starring Zellweger, Grant and Colin Firth, and Zellweger received her first Oscar nomination. (She subsequently won twice: Best Supporting Actress for Cold mountain and best actress for Judyfor which she also won a Golden Globe.) In the first Bridget Jones movie, Jones is torn between Daniel Cleaver, her dashing vagabond of a boss, played by Grant, and the steady, slightly reserved lawyer Mark Darcy, played by Firth.

Other, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, was released in 2004. In it, Jones breaks up with Darcy (once again played by Firth) and goes to Thailand, only to briefly reconnect with Cleaver (played by Grant) and ends up in a Thai prison, wrongly accused of drug smuggling. The third, Baby Bridget Jones, was released in 2016. In that film, Jones is pregnant and unsure whether the father is on-again, off-again beau Darcy (Firth) or newcomer Jack Qwant, played by Patrick Dempsey. Emma Thompson co-wrote the screenplay and plays Jones’ doctor in the film.

“I find her so endearing … her self-deprecating kind of determination,” Zellweger said in the same interview in 2022. “I love her. And I think it’s really rare to follow a character through different stages in her life.”

He returns to reprise his character for 2016 Baby Bridget Jones is what brought Zellweger back from her acting hiatus. “I had a good five-year period when I was happy and in a new chapter that no one was even aware of,” she told New York Magazine in 2019. “Six years. That time was important. It’s a quieter life and I love it.”

Although he was not in the third film, Grant is returning for the fourth installment of the franchise, although he previously vowed not to do any more rom-coms. “Obviously I got too old and fat and ugly to do romantic comedies, so I got away with more interesting things,” he said on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2023

In April 2024, Grant expressed excitement about the new film’s “very good script,” saying it was “very moving, but also funny. The film, he told PEOPLE, was based in part on author Fielding’s “experiences raising two children on her own after her husband died… And so Bridget raises two children and wonders if she should ever go back to relationships.”

In this continuation of the franchise, Jones is a single mother of two, struggling with the death of her husband Mark Darcy and deciding whether to re-enter the dating world.

The film is based on Fielding’s novel of the same name from 2013. In 2022, the author revealed that she was working on an adaptation of the screenplay for the book. “Yes, I’m working on it and I really hope it happens,” Fielding told the Radio Times. “Every film that gets made is a miracle – it’s really hard to make films and make them good. But I’d love to see it on the screen.”

Zellweger gained weight to play the character Bridget Jones in the first three films, which has been widely discussed, but the actress doesn’t understand the preoccupation with changing her body.
