The trio of young men were sadly pronounced dead at the scene shortly after officers arrived.

The force added that the cause of their deaths is yet to be confirmed – as they launch an urgent investigation into the “heartbreaking” incident.

The woman, 42, who locals say is a Sudanese national known only as Jasmine, was arrested today.

She is still in police custody at the hospital.

Neighbors believe the children are a boy about eight years old, a girl believed to be four years old and a boy about six months old.

Police confirmed on Sunday that they had notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct over previous police contact this month.

An IOPC spokesman said: “We were made aware of this tragic incident in Bristol this afternoon by Avon and Somerset Police, who informed us that we had contacted the police earlier this month.

“We have requested a paper referral with additional information about the previous contact and once we receive it we will assess it to determine if further action is required from us.”

The suspect’s husband, also believed to be Sudanese, lived with the family, according to a nearby resident.

It is not known if he was in possession at the time.

Police have not yet confirmed the name of the woman, the age of the children or their relationship with her.

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said residents were all “shocked” after believing the suspect was “lovely”.

She said: “She was so happy when she had that little boy.

“We were very happy for her, we came and gave gifts. I am very surprised because she was really gentle, really lovely.

“She always had a smile on her face.”

District Chief Inspector Vicks Hayward-Melen said: “This is an incredibly tragic and heartbreaking incident where three children have sadly died.

“My sincere condolences go out to the children’s loved ones and we will ensure they are supported through our Family Liaison Unit.

“We believe this is an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the wider community, however officers will remain at the scene to provide reassurance to anyone with any questions or concerns.

“Residents can expect an increased police presence over the coming days and we thank them for their cooperation during this time.”
