It is believed that he may have had health problems before he drowned at around 3.30pm today.

When the incident happened in the afternoon, the weather was clear and the sea calm.

Lifeguards will continue to patrol the area known to have strong currents until October 15.

The local municipality posted signs in English and Spanish on beaches to warn swimmers of dangerous ocean currents.

It came after a Briton was found dead wearing just his shorts and a mask after going diving off the coast of Majorca.

His body was recovered from the sea near the resort of Magaluf, and police are now launching an investigation into his death.

A Civil Defense boat made the grim discovery before recovering his body and taking it to the Santa Ponsa Yacht Club on Tuesday.

The local Civil Guard was notified around 4:00 p.m. as they immediately launched an investigation into who the man was.

He is believed to be in his 60s or 70s, according to well-placed sources who also said he is British.

It is still unclear whether the man was a tourist in Spain or lived on the island.

Officials believe he was most likely on Malgrats Island – a cluster of two uninhabited islets opposite Santa Ponsa Bay – before his death.

The Malgrats Islands Nature Reserve is considered a tourist area for snorkeling because of the clear water.

Many hotels offer trips to the island with local guides who organize trips to dive and explore the cave system under the sea.

Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of death although drowning is the most likely cause at this stage.

They are still investigating whether an earlier health problem took its toll before he got into trouble.

A police source said this afternoon: “The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.”

The Civil Guard also announced that it was reporting to the court in Palma before the autopsy.
