Bronny James ‘Starting to Get into His Groove’ in Return to Basketball Following Cardiac Arrest

Bronny James feels it! The University of Southern California freshman scored 10 points in the Trojans’ win over the University of California on Wednesday night, one game after scoring a career-high 15 points against Oregon State University. “He’s starting to get better and more confident as a player,” USC teammate Kobe Johnson told ESPN after the game. “And he started playing his game. When he first came back, he was on [tighter] minutes of restrictions and he [was] a bit nervous about what to do. But now he’s starting to get into his groove and become the player everyone knows he is.”

Bronny, the eldest son of NBA all-time leading scorer LeBron James, is just four months away from undergoing surgery to treat a congenital heart defect – a response to a cardiac arrest he suffered during training in late July.

He then missed the first eight games of the season before returning to the field last month, making his college debut in front of his “super excited” dad, who was cheering on the field.

“It’s a big milestone for our family, for sure,” LeBron said of his son’s college debut.

Bronny has since played in six games for USC, averaging 7.5 points per game while playing the court on a limited basis due to his health.

USC head coach Andy Enfield said Bronny’s playing time has been determined by the team’s medical staff and how much time he sees on the field will be a “week-by-week” decision.

“He’s a freshman, [and] this was his sixth game,” Enfield said of Bronny’s performance on Wednesday night. “He’s developing as a player and it’s nice to see that and it’s nice to watch. He’s a typical freshman, but he had a slight disadvantage compared to most freshmen because he was out for five months and had to come back in the middle of the season. That is very difficult to do.”

Bronny added three assists and two rebounds in the Trojans’ 82-74 win over the Golden Bears, prompting the “Bronny! Bronny!” chants from the crowd at USC near the end of the game.

“He was great tonight,” concluded his coach.
