Brooke Shields knows when she’s out of her element.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Blue lagoon star revealed what it was like watching her daughter, Grier Henchy, 18, make her runway debut during the Tommy Hilfiger fashion show at New York Fashion Week on September 18.
“My daughter delighted me. I really was,” Shields, 59, told PEOPLE exclusively.

“Because I can’t train it,” she said. “How could I even walk like that?”
The Suddenly Susan star went on to explain that posing for editorial (ie print) shoots is completely different than walking the runway, so she couldn’t offer her youngest daughter much guidance.
Shields did reveal one funny piece of advice she gave Grier, though.
“[Grier] he says, ‘What do I do?'” Shields recalled. “And I say, ‘Look hungry and angry.'”
She says, ‘You’re no help.’ I said, ‘I’ve never walked a runway. I don’t know how to do it.’”

“But she took it very seriously,” the proud mum continued. “She took education from whoever would give it to her, and she didn’t think she knew better, which I was very proud of [of].”

Shields, who is also the mother of daughter Rowan Henchy (21) with husband Chris Henchy, initially had great reservations about her daughter’s career choice.
“I fought it for so long,” she said in the 2023 interview Living with Kelly and Mark.
“It’s a different industry now than it was. She’s interested in the runway, and that’s brutal. I never went to the runway. I don’t think I could handle it.”

She continued, saying, “I finally had to give in and say are you going to do it a.) I’m not going to be your manager. You will work with an agency. You will have an excellent work ethic. It won’t be pleasant and you will listen to me.”
