Brooke Shields’s Daughter Wore Her Mom’s Andre Agassi Wedding Dress to Her High School Graduation (Exclusive)

When it came time to pick out a dress for her 2024 prom, Brooke Shields’ daughter Grier Henchy, 18, looked no further than her mom’s closet.

“Her prom dress was my first wedding dress,” Shields says of the dress she wore to marry tennis ace Andre Agassi in 1997.

“We had to reshape it a little to make it narrow and sleek,” adds Grier, 18, who just started her freshman year of college. (She joined her older sister, Rowan, 21, at Wake Forest University.)

“We took out all the poufs because I didn’t want them to be poufs.” Adds Shields, “And we made it strapless.”

“She looked great in it,” says the 59-year-old star. “What an honor it is when they want to carry your things. They usually don’t think I’m cool.”

In this week’s PEOPLE, Shields and her two daughters, Rowan and Grier (fathered by Shields’ second husband Chris Henchy) share what family life is all about really like, including a search of their mother’s unique wardrobe.

Nothing is off limits, says Shields, now an empty nester for the first time. “Honestly, I can wear anything because just so it has a second life – you keep things and wonder why,” she says. “It’s like some big Sotheby’s auction? I really doubt it. Unless they are iconic items. So when they have a second life, it feels good.”

The dress she wore to her wedding to Agassi (whom she divorced in 1999) is a perfect example. “He’s a good guy so it was a full-circle moment for me,” she says, “and it’s an honor for something and I think that’s healthy.”

It’s not the first time her daughters have worn one of her famous combinations. In 2021, Rowan chose to wear her mother’s crimson dress designed by Richard Tyler to her high school prom. (Brooke originally wore it to the 1998 Golden Globes.)

As Rowan says, “I was down in New York, going through a bunch of her old dresses, making a TikTok and trying on this red dress. I didn’t really want to go through the process of looking for a prom dress. I said something like ‘If we have something here…’ and I found this red dress.”

“It fit me except for my breasts, and we only tailored it a little. It was like this is perfect and I’m going to make a Hollywood wave,” she says, laughing.

Shields smiles at how it all turned out. “First of all, if it was my idea, it would never have passed. They would say, ‘That’s strange.’ So the fact that she went down and went through the archives and found it herself, and it was such a special dress. It was made for me by Richard Tyler and I felt so glamorous in it – and my agency read me a riot story the next day.”

“They said, ‘You’ll never be taken seriously as an actress if you wear a red dress,'” she recalls. “And I said, ‘I don’t understand what the correlation is,’ and the next year everyone wore red to the Golden Globes and I took the PEOPLE spread [of the dress] threw it on their desk and said ‘I’m ahead of my time’.”
