Bryan Tanaka Confirms ‘Amicable’ and ‘Mutual’ Split from Mariah Carey in Social Media Post

Bryan Tanaka spoke for the first time about his split from Mariah Carey.

On Tuesday, Tanaka confirmed that he and the “We Belong Together” singer had broken up in a lengthy post on social media.

“Dear friends and fans,” Tanaka (40) began on Instagram. “It is with mixed emotions that I share this personal news of my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven incredible years together. Our decision to go our separate ways is mutual, and as we navigate these separate journeys, we do so with deep respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the priceless the time we shared. The memories we created and artistic collaborations are forever etched in my heart.”

Tanaka added of her 12-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, “Mariah’s dedication to her family and her dedication to her craft have inspired us throughout our journey together. I want to express my love and gratitude to Mariah and her amazing children, whose warmth and kindness have enriched my life in ways words cannot describe.”

He also asked for privacy, respect and understanding during “this sensitive time” — which Tanaka plans to devote to his craft.

“The outpouring of love and support from fans has been a beacon of strength and I am extremely grateful for the encouragement that continues to lift me up,” he said. “I look forward to continuing my journey, knowing that my passion for inspiration, dance and the creative arts will resonate in the next chapters.”

Carey, 54, and Tanaka first sparked breakup rumors when fans noticed he was missing from her Merry Christmas One and All! the tour she recently finished. At the time, a source told PEOPLE that Carey was celebrating the holidays in Aspen without Tanaka, who has traditionally accompanied her on the snowy getaway.

This was the first time in years that the Songbird Supreme and the creative director, who have been in a professional relationship since 2006, have not traveled together on holiday.

Days later, a source told PEOPLE that Carey was embracing the holiday spirit while celebrating the season with her twins.

“Mariah is successful this Christmas. “She’s feeling good and in full Mariah holiday mode,” the source said. “She’s thrilled with the success of the tour with her kids and the work she’s already done on her next album.”

The couple was last seen in public hanging out together back in March when the hitmaker celebrated her birthday, which she prefers to call her “anniversary”. Then Tanaka shared a photo of himself and Carey smiling and hugging on Instagram, with a sweet message in the caption.

“This is one of my favorite pictures. Ever. Happy anniversary my beautiful queen. 🦋3/27🦋❤️”, he wrote then.

The pair first linked up in 2006 when Tanaka joined the superstar on the road on her Adventures of Mimi tour. Then, after a decade of working together, the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” singer and the choreographer became romantically involved in 2016.
