Bubba Wallace Says Wife Amanda Has Been a ‘Massive Help’ Managing His Depression

NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace is open about his depression and how his wife Amanda has been a “huge help” in improving his mental health. Wallace, 30, opened The Associated Press last week about social media posts he made in the past detailing his depression and how he dealt with it.

The seven-year NASCAR pro finished a career-best 10th in the NASCAR Cup Series season last month, but shortly after the final race, he took to social media to express his disappointment with his finish.

Wallace wrote to his followers on Instagram that he experienced “little to no emotion” after the race ended – even with his close friend Ryan Blaney winning the Cup Series championship. “You would think that winning the championship would bring back that joy and excitement. Unfortunately, it didn’t,” he wrote, according to AP. “My wife sees that I’m gone, but I don’t have anything or why I feel that way to let her help me. To my people staring at a blank wall, I’m with you. Tomorrow is a new day. One more chance. Follow him.”

A few weeks later, Wallace met with Blaney to celebrate his championship and told the AP that he’s been feeling better in recent weeks — thanks in large part to working on his mental health with the help of his wife.

She says, ‘How are you feeling today?’ And it’s like one of those days,” Wallace told the newspaper. “We keep each other on our toes. We play video games together. So she is very helpful. And then the next thing you know, it’s 5 o’clock and it’s like, ‘How’s it going?’ and I’m fine. It just kind of dissipates.”

Wallace and his wife will celebrate their first wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve. The NASCAR driver often shares sweet photos of himself with Amanda, who he first got engaged to in July 2021. “We have so much fun together,” Wallace told PEOPLE last year ahead of their wedding.

At that time, Amanda wasn’t afraid to blow up her future husband either.

“We have such a good relationship,” she told PEOPLE ahead of their wedding. “I love the time we spend together. We could sit together all day every day and never get tired of each other.”

“He’s also handsome and charming,” Amanda said.
