Bulldog Visits Santa with a Special Wish: ‘All I Want for Christmas Is a Home’ (Exclusive)

A little rescue bulldog named Grape sat on Santa’s lap with great desire.

In a video posted on TikTok earlier this month, a dog attends a pet meetup at Century City Mall in Los Angeles with a sign on a stroller that reads: “Santa… All I want for Christmas is a home.”

Grape is currently up for adoption through Roadogs Rescue in Southern California, where he was transferred by an out-of-state rescue due to his complicated health issues after being surrendered by a breeder because he was unable to produce sperm.

Nikki Carvey, founder of Roadogs Rescue, tells PEOPLE that Grape “could barely walk or breathe” when he arrived.

“Bulldogs are prone to soft palate problems, which affects their breathing, and Grape was really bad,” says Carvey. “He has a terrible build and joint problems. We think [the breeders] were trying to create a ‘mini’ bulldog, but instead they created a mess with short legs and damaged joints.”

The rescue spent about $20,000 on Grape’s medical care, including surgery on his palate to help him breathe and stem cell treatment for his joints.

“He’s by no means perfect, but he’s a happy boy who deserves to live his best life,” Carvey says.

Grape lived with foster parents Cailee and Jack, who took him to a Santa event.

“The grapes liked it!” Carvey says of the festive gathering. “He always enjoys getting love and attention from people — especially if treats are involved. Santa said his wish for a new home was perfect, and Mrs. Claus said he was definitely on the ‘nice’ list.”

Carvey adds that Grape has a “big personality” and is “definitely not someone you would ignore in a room.”

“He seems to enjoy grooming and making people laugh,” she says, noting that Cailee and Jack compared the dog to “a toddler who just walked and thinks the world revolves around him — which it kind of does.”

Grape is looking for his forever family, and Carvey says his ideal adopter would have experience with bulldogs so they know what to expect.

“He has mobility issues because of his joints, so he needs someone to monitor how much time he can play,” she says. “He would love a yard where he could drive and a stroller to go on adventures around the world. He can walk, but not for long.”

Since Grape loves people, she thinks he would make a great family friend in a home with older children and would enjoy watching football games or accompanying the kids trick-or-treating. Although he would probably make friends with the neighborhood dogs, she says he “gets jealous” when he shares a home with other dogs, so she recommends a home where he is the only dog.

Since posting the video, Carvey says “everyone is obsessed with how cute he is.”

“It’s even better live though!” she adds. “One person who met him at the mall cried because they thought he was so cute. People just love to pet him. But just because he has some extra needs, people loving him doesn’t mean people want to adopt him. I think people tend to shy away from dogs that are a little different.”

Carvey wants to encourage people “not to judge a book by its cover.”

“It can be easy to dismiss a dog because it’s a little different or requires extra care, but don’t let that discourage you,” she continues. “Grape is a great dog who likes to go out like any other dog – you just have to make some adjustments to make sure he’s safe. I just love it and any family would be happy to have it. He will bring you so much joy!”
