Cynthia Erivo Talks ‘Special’ Connection with Ariana Grande and Singing Together on Wicked: ‘It Just Works’

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s relationship is Wicked Great!

On Tonight’s show on Friday, Erivo, 36, told host Jimmy Fallon that she and Grande, 30, formed a “special” bond while starring in the upcoming two-part film adaptation of the musical Wicked.

Erivo, who portrays Elphaba in the 2024 film musical, said Grande, who plays Glinda, is “the best”.

“The bond we made is really special,” Fallon said, adding that “now she has a family member for life.”

According to Harriet star, their vocal chemistry is also special.

“I don’t know if we realized that our voices would fit so well,” she said. “Our voices are very, very different, but when we sing together, it just works.”

Grande calls this flawlessness “worming,” Erivo said.

“She calls it worming. I don’t know why,” the actress told Fallon. “Somehow we find each other.”

When asked how the film is going, Erivo said “pretty good.”

“I’m so excited,” she said. “We had a really good time on set and it’s just a beautiful, beautiful atmosphere.”

“We work really hard,” she added.

The Enthusiasm star and Victorious alum were first announced as the lead witches of Elphab and Glinda in November 2021, news that they — as well as Wicked directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy rich Asians, In the Heights) — they announced on Instagram.

Erivo shared a photo of the pink and green (Glinda and Elphaba’s signature colors) flower arrangement that Grande sent her with a message that read: “Dear Cynthia, I can’t even begin to cover the honor. I can’t wait to hug you. See you in Oz .”

Grande also received flowers from her co-star, along with a message that began with “pink goes well with green.”

“Congratulations Miss A, the role was made for you,” Erivo continued. “I look forward to sharing this musical journey with you.”

Wicked also stars Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and BridgertonJonathan Bailey as Fiyero, the main lover in the musical. Grande’s boyfriend, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical star Ethan Slater, plays Boq in the film.

The cast also includes Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik, trans. Diversity.

The film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical ⁠— based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West ⁠— was first announced back in 2016, and will arrive in cinemas next year.
