Busy Philipps Praises ‘So Cool’ Daughter Birdie at the Mean Girls Premiere (Exclusive)

Busy Philipps is the cool mom of the moment — even if her kids don’t agree!

On Monday, the actress (44) stepped on the pink carpet in Mean girls premiered in New York with daughter Birdie, 15.

Before the mother-daughter duo took their seats, Philipps, 43, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her excitement for the musical remake of the cult classic 2004 teen comedy.

“So I saw the movie, but I didn’t see it in front of an audience, and I didn’t see it — I didn’t talk to anybody who saw it that wasn’t like Tina [Fey],” the white girls actress tells PEOPLE about Saturday night live alum.

Fey, 53, wrote the screenplay and stars in the film, reprising her role as Mrs. Norbury. She attended the premiere, as did Lindsay Lohan, who played Cady Heron in the original film. Christopher Briney, Reneé Rapp and Angourie Rice were also present.

While speaking with PEOPLE, Philipps admitted that she’s not sure if she identifies as a “cool mom” — head nod SNL alum Amy Poehler, who also starred in the original as the mother of Plastics leader Regina George (Rachel McAdams).

“Oh, I mean, no, of course not,” he said Cougar Town talent speaks to PEOPLE.

She continues, “I think I’m cool, but my kids don’t think I’m cool. And I’m aware of that. I also think I’m clear about the fact that I’m their mother and not their friend, so that definitely makes me uncool.”

The mother-of-two said Birdie, who was in the distance talking to one of her mum’s producers, was “so cool”.

Discussing the remake, Philipps says that she, Fey and Poehler, 52, (who are “all friends”) had an “understanding” that the musical “would be completely different” from the first.

Philipps also shares Cricket, 10, who was not present at the event, with ex Marc Silverstein.

In March, Philipps shared the news of taking on the role of Regina George’s mom on her Instagram. “You know what? I’ve never really been a normal mom,” she captioned the post with the hashtag #meangirls.

She also posted again Deadline article on his Instagram Story, in which he writes: “Readers, she cried (from happiness once.)”

“Tina Fey’s universe IS so real and god, how did I end up in it? I’m grateful every day for her friendship and support,” she wrote in another Instagram post.

The first time she masqueraded in that role was actually in 2019, when she masqueraded as Birdie, who was dressed as Regina George, for Halloween.

“Her name is Regina George and she’s a big deal.💗 #meangirls #meangirlsbroadway 💗,” Philipps captioned the photo.

Mean girls opens in theaters on January 12.
