California Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo Arrested on Suspicion of Drunk Driving in Los Angeles

California Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence after she was involved in a crash in Los Angeles.

Online Los Angeles police records show Carrillo, 43, was arrested at 1:35 a.m. Friday and arrested at 4:07 a.m.

According to Los Angeles TimesThe LAPD arrested Carrillo after they responded to her alleged crash in two parked vehicles in the 6200 block of Monterey Road in Northeast Los Angeles.

In cell phone video taken by the owner of one of the hit vehicles obtained by Fox 11, Carrillo can be seen in his car telling police, “I’m sorry. I sneezed and lost track of the vehicle.”

The video then showed Carrillo performing a field sobriety test, during which she appeared to lose her balance. A witness who took the cell phone video also told Fox 11 that Carrillo’s speech seemed slurred.

LAPD issued the following statement on Xu (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday: “The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of media reports that focus in part on cell phone footage capturing what appears to be part of a DUI investigation involving Rep. Wendy Carrillo and has been given the opportunity to complete a field sobriety test in a place that is characterized as more private.”

“Chief Moore directed the local command to review the body-worn video of the officers regarding the actions of the officers and at this time the actions of the officers do not appear to be inappropriate,” the statement continued. “A critical aspect of a field sobriety test is to provide a reasonable location for the individual being tested to assess impairment without distraction or distraction.”

“Officers conducting the investigation have the discretion to perform the test in a location that best enables an objective assessment of individuals,” the statement concluded.

According to a summary of Carrillo’s arrest provided by Capt. Kelly Muniz of the LAPD, according to LA TimesCarrillo was arrested for being involved in a traffic accident while having a high blood alcohol level, which Muniz said was “two times the legal limit or more.”

Online booking records show Carrillo was released Friday on her own recognizance hours after her arrest. She issued a statement that afternoon.

“Early this morning I was involved in a traffic incident involving parked vehicles. Fortunately, no one was injured and I was cooperating with the police,” Carrillo said. LA Times. “As a public servant, I am aware that I must hold myself to a higher standard that requires personal responsibility for my conduct and I accept responsibility for my actions.”

“I sincerely apologize to my family, constituents, colleagues and staff for all my actions that did not meet those expectations. I intend to seek the necessary help and support,” she continued. “As I do so, I remain committed to my family, my constituents and the community I grew up in and proudly represent.”

According to LAPD online booking records, Carrillo is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 1.

Carrillo has represented Los Angeles and South Glendale as part of the 52nd Assembly District since being elected to the California State Assembly in 2017.
