Considered to be one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, this colour-changing cephalopod was caught on camera by Enda Kesim at the Ari Atoll in the Maldives.

At first sight, the octopus can barely be seen as it lurks in the coral; however as Enda approaches the octopus decides to reveal itself before gliding along the seabed.

After switching between its natural brown complexion and the deep-sea green of its surroundings several times, the octopus then stretches over a reef, camouflaging itself with unbelievable detail and virtually disappearing in the blink of an eye.

Enda, an experienced diver from Istanbul, Turkey said: “I’ve been diving for 10 years and I have never seen anything like this before.

“Being able to watch an octopus perform such a show was just amazing.

“It was like it was playing a game with me, saying ‘look at me’ and ‘look what I can do’.

“Octopuses are usually quite difficult to find, because usually they hide themselves away in rock holes.

“But this one was so out in the open and engaging.

“I did leave him alone after a while, as I didn’t want him to squirt ink on me and ruin the moment.

“It truly was one of my favourite moments in all my years of diving.”
