On Sunday, February 1, 2004, 11-year-old Carlie Jane Brucia told her friend she wanted to walk home. Dressed in a red shirt and blue jeans and carrying a pink backpack, Carlie Jane Brucia left her friend’s house at 6:15 p.m.
However, Carlien’s stepfather, Steven Kansler, was informed of the plan by her friend’s mother. Steven Kansler expected to intercept Carlie and bring her home safely, but he never found her. After returning empty-handed, Steven and Carlie’s mother realized there was no sign of Carlie anywhere, became concerned and called 911 around 7:30 p.m.
Discovered on CCTV footage, Carlie was abducted, approached and spoken to by a man in a uniform shirt before being taken away, and was never seen alive again.
On February 6, 2004, Carlie’s decomposing body was pulled from the parking lot of Central Christ Church, just a few miles from her home. She was half naked. An autopsy found her official cause of death to be strangulation.
