Carmen Salinas died Thursday night after a 60-year career in Spanish-language television and film. Her family announced her death on social media after having been in a coma since she suffered a stroke in November.
Alongside the black-and-white photo was a tweet praising fans, adding: “It is with great sadness that we inform you that lead actress Carmen Salinas passed away today.”
Salinas began her acting career as a child in the 1950s. Salinas was born on October 5, 1939 in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. On the radio, Salinas performed impersonations and sang, before moving on to talent shows and beauty pageants, and eventually to nightclubs.
She became famous in soap operas in the 1960s after participating in series such as Frontera, Sublime Redención and Casa de Barrio. As a result, she made her film debut in Roberto Gavaldón’s La Vida Intil de Pito Pérez.
Later he appeared in films such as Bellas de Noche, La Misma Luna, Todo el Poder, Danzón, Cartas an Elena, Esta Noche Cena Pancho and El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro. He also appeared in the 2004 thriller Man on Fire, directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington.
Among his theater credits, he produced the musical Aventurera, which featured the participation of Edith González, Itat Cantoral, Niurka Marcos, Ninel Conde and Maribel Guardia, among others.
Later in life, Salinas joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party of Mexico. In 2015 she was elected to the position of multi-member federal deputy, a position she held until 2018.
Among the survivors is a daughter, María Eugenia. In 1994 she died before her son Pedro. The family is not yet planning a memorial mass.
