One of the most legendary (and cheapest!) pieces of Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic wardrobe just sold for $52,000!
The skirt Sarah Jessica Parker wears in the opening credits Sex and the city was one of many iconic items included in Julien’s Auctions’ Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women In Fashion.
It was also one of the top earners at the Jan. 18 auction, which featured items “from Hollywood’s golden age to today’s trend-setting celebrities and influencers.”
The tulle skirt — a three-tiered white tutu with a satin sash — topped only the velvet cocktail dress worn by Princess Diana and the Givenchy ensemble worn by Grace Kelly to meet President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, both of which sold for $325,000. dollars.

The winning bid for Carrie’s skirt was one of the most shocking of the auctions, as it was estimated to sell for $8,000 to $12,000 – and SATC costume designer Patricia Field acquired the piece for just $5 before the HBO series premiered in 1998.

Field originally planned to style Carrie in a Marc Jacobs spring 1998 runway dress, but ultimately decided to go with something more timeless for the opening credits, according to the Julien’s Auctions website.
After rummaging through the $5 bin in Manhattan’s Garment District, she found the skirt and—with Parker’s seal of approval—the iconic tutu became a key piece not only SATC history, but also the history of fashion.
And due to the nature of the opening credits sequence, in which Carrie — and her iconic tutu — is splashed by a passing bus, the auctioned skirt is just one of five used on SATC. (And Parker owns one of those!)

Tutu appears once again in 2008 SATC movie as Carrie gives friends Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) a closet-cleaning fashion show.
As the chic crew comes together to decide which items a fashionista should keep or toss, the tulle number deserves a unanimous “keep.”

They also competed with an autograph SATC cast photo, which sold for $1,170, and Carrie’s laptop, which fetched $12,700.
The fashion-focused auction also featured items worn by icons such as Whitney Houston, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and Chihuahua Elle Woods from Legal blonde.
