Cate Blanchett’s 4 Children: Everything to Know

Cate Blanchett is a proud mother of four children.

The Oscar-winning actress with her husband Andrew Upton has three sons – Dashiell (22), Roman (19) and Ignatius (16) – and a daughter Edith (8).

But despite being one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood, The A song star said her children are blissfully unaware of her level of fame. In early 2022, Blanchett received the Chaplin Award at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York. She found that Page six that her children “have no idea” why she is receiving the prestigious award, adding that they are “disinterested” in her career – but in the “best possible, healthiest way”.

“I told them, ‘Oh, I’m going to New York for 36 hours. I’ll be back on Wednesday…’ One of them is getting an award at school, and they said, ‘Oh, OK, have a good time.’ ”

While Blanchett keeps her children out of the spotlight, Blue jasmine the actress often talks about the life lessons she passed on to her family. In 2021, she said she was teaching her children the importance of verifying credibility when getting news from social media.

“I’m old enough to have been taught at school what primary, secondary and tertiary sources are. I tell the kids when they mention something: ‘Where did you read that? Who is [authenticated] that? You have to learn to read the picture and the article. And if you’re going to share something, check the sources,’ she said to Carrier in the interview. “Sure, they roll their eyes. But when you hear them talking to their friends, I think they’re responsible.”

Dashiell John Upton, 22

Blanchett’s eldest child, Dashiell John Upton, was born on December 3, 2001.

While Blanchett told W magazine that she didn’t want theater to “feel like a family business” to Dashiell and his younger siblings in 2010, Dashiell had already shown an interest in the entertainment industry the year before.

“My oldest is already doing his version [of] Hamlet,” Blanchett told PEOPLE in 2009 about then-8-year-old Dashiell.

Now 22, Dashiell is currently in film school.

Novel Robert Upton, 19

The actress welcomed her second son, Roman Robert Upton, on April 23, 2004. Like his siblings, Roman often stays out of the limelight, although he has been seen joining his mom on the red carpet. In 2014 he walked the red carpet at the Critic’s Choice Awards and in 2018 he attended IWC Schaffhausen at SIHH in Switzerland.

Blanchett often lashes out at her son in press interviews, and in an appearance in 2015 Jimmy Kimmel Live!discussed the meaning behind her son’s unique name — something that raised a few eyebrows.

“Novel … Polanski, but it’s also the French word for book,” she told the talk show host.

Ignatius Martin Upton, 16

Ignatius Martin Upton is Blanchett’s third child and was born on January 1, 2008 in Sydney, Australia.

The Oceanov 8 Star previously explained the hilarious reasoning behind Ignatius’ name. Like his older brother Roman, Ignacio’s name has a literary connection. But this time, the connection is with a series of children’s novels, Captain Gaća.

“I was eight months pregnant and hallucinating, and there’s a part in the book where he gets so upset that everyone teases him because his name is Professor Pee-Pee Poopypants that he’s making the world change their names,” she explained. “They have this internal code, and they give these examples of names. You go down to the ‘I’ and the example is Ignatius. It was like the Virgin Mary saying ‘Boom!’ ”

Shortly after the birth of Ignatius, Blanchett told PEOPLE that she was enjoying a household full of boys.

“Having boys is great. It’s a neat position and I love the high energy that comes with raising boys. It’s fun,” the actress said.

She also noted that she enjoys taking her children to work with her, and Ignatius got the VIP treatment while his mom performed at the A tram called desire in Sydney 2009.

“[Ignatius] actually watched the show backstage, which is a really interesting and exciting place with people doing makeup and costumes and stuff [the kids] I like that.”

Edith Vivian Patricia Upton, 8

Blanchett and Upton adopted their daughter Edith Vivian Patricia Upton on March 6, 2015.

The Tar The actress has previously spoken about her sons’ close bond with their little sister, saying she finds her “remarkable”.

“I think it’s remarkable to see them become a unit. And a very welcoming unit at that,” Cinderella said the star Sydney Morning Herald 2015. “I’m very proud of them.”

In an appearance on an Australian talk show in 2022 Projectactress discussed her experience homeschooling her children during the 2020 COVID-19 quarantine.

“My older kids were fine, they were self-directed. But I had to sort of process my seven-year-old, and I realized I couldn’t even teach her math in first grade, and she sniffed it out after 14 days,” she said. “I was a dead duck. There was no respect there.”

Blanchett then revealed that she had to “dress like her [daughter’s] teacher” and had to “put on her teacher’s voice” in order to homeschool Edith.

“She didn’t want to start class until we had a whole bunch of stuffed animals, all of which had the names of all the people in her class,” she continued, before joking, “I felt like some weird cross between The Muppets and MasterClass. It was quite traumatic actually.”
