Matthew McConaughey’s 3 Kids: All About Levi, Vida and Livingston

Matthew McConaughey has many impressive acting roles under his belt, but one role he always knew he was meant to play was that of a father.

“The only thing I knew I wanted to be was a father,” he said Dallas Buyers Club the star told PEOPLE in October 2020. “And it remains the highlight for me. Being a dad has always been my only dream… I can’t imagine anything more important.”

With his wife Camila Alves McConaughey, with whom he has been married since 2012, he has three children: Levi (15), Vid (14) and Livingston (11).

Over the years, the McConaugheys have given insight into their parenting styles and how they raise their children. In June 2020, the couple opened up about parenthood during an interview with City and villageand Matthew revealed that he was the “more consistent yes guy” of the two.

“Sometimes loving your children means giving them exactly what they want. Other times it means tough love,” he told the news outlet. “Wealthy people can give their children everything they want, but they usually won’t get what they need. Loving a child is much harder if you really care.”

The Green lights the author has previously shared activities that he and his children do together and, of course, this includes encouraging their creativity.

“My favorite thing is to read a five-minute story that turns into a never-ending story,” he told PEOPLE in 2013. “When it’s time for the story and I get to the end, there’s no ‘end.’ Kids hate the end!”

“What you learn when you have kids is that they think four-dimensionally,” he continued. “I’ll tell them a story about a cheetah that ran and befriended a horse, and then the river came and they were separated. Then I’ll say ‘The End.’ But Levi [replies], ‘Well no, the cheetah grew wings and flew back across the river.’ There’s no end, so it goes on and on and on!”

As he reflected on his career and what he hopes to leave behind with PEOPLE in February 2019, Matthew called his sons and daughter his “living legacy.”

“I have a big role in looking after my three children until they are 18 and out of the house,” he said. “Yes, see if I keep my word in a few years. That’s what I think the most honorable thing to do is to have three autonomous, conscientious, confident children.”

Levi Alves McConaughey, 15

Matthew and Camila’s eldest child, son Levi Alves McConaughey, was born on July 7, 2008.

“A healthy baby boy was born. Camila and I were side by side the whole time. We are both tired and elated, and so happy to have done the biggest miracle in the world – Having a baby and creating a family. Now comes the biggest adventure – raising one, together” , Matthew said in a statement at the time.

During the performance at Good morning America In 2009, a few months after the birth of Levi, Matthew opened up about sharing a bond with his son.

“[Over the] the last two and a half months, he’s really started to like me,” he said. “He and I have our own jokes that he and his mother don’t have.”

From a young age, Levi had a passion for music, as his proud papa shared during an October 2020 interview with PEOPLE.

“Basically, he came out of the womb knowing the minor key from the major key on the piano,” Matthew said. “In the last six months, he’s really started listening to composers, and now he can listen to a movie and tell you, ‘Oh, that’s Hans Zimmer,’ or ‘That’s John Williams,’ which is really cool.”

Levi is also into surfing, something he and his dad have in common and have been doing together for years.

In March 2023, Matthew posted a photo of his son on Instagram showing off his “surf souvenirs”. In the photo, Levi’s back is covered in bandages and bruises from surfing as he stands next to his board.

On top of sharing similar interests, the father and son duo look remarkably similar. On March 6, 2023, Levi made a rare public appearance with his mom and sister Vida at the Stella McCartney show at Paris Fashion Week, and fans noted that the teenager was a spitting image of his famous father.

Levi turned 15 in July 2023 — and one of his gifts from mom and dad was permission to join social media.

McConaughey told PEOPLE two months later that after “talking about the pitfalls and ups and downs” of social media, “we feel he has enough information and is mature enough to tell his own story.”

“He is a very attentive and cool young man,” the actor said of his son. “I hope the world out there can reciprocate and treat him as he treats them.”

One of Levi’s first Instagram posts was about his time working at Refettorio Paris — a restaurant that serves meals to the homeless.

“A few times back I got the chance to cook at @refettorioparis for some people who normally don’t have a very tasty meal,” he wrote on the photo carousel. “Refettorio Paris serves first class meals to the homeless. They have created a great restaurant with top chefs cooking – using produce that was thrown away.”

Vida Alves McConaughey, 14

On January 3, 2010, the couple welcomed their second child, daughter Vida Alves McConaughey.

Matthew shared the first photo of Vida on his website three weeks later.

“This is a picture of our newest family member Vid Alves McConaughey,” he wrote alongside a picture of him and Camila holding the newborn in the hospital. “Thank you for all the well wishes, the future is bright, just keep living Matthew and Camila.”

In December 2020, when Vida was 10 years old, she briefly joined her father in an episode of Amy Jo Martin’s Why not now? podcast, and offered him constructive criticism.

“What lesson do you learn over and over again?” – Martin asked the actor, to which he called his daughter to help him with the answer.

Sitting on her father’s lap, Vida said: “We believe, I guess, when you correct us. You will correct us many times [Vida and her two siblings] and then you’ll come back and explain why you corrected us, but usually we’re like…”

– We got it the first time – Matej finished her with a laugh, to which Vida agreed.

Following in her father’s footsteps, Vida earned her first acting credits in 2021, playing a small role in her father’s film, Sing 2.

Matthew discussed his daughter’s adorable cameo in the film during an appearance on Tonight’s show.

“Your daughter has to play a small part in this movie,” host Jimmy Fallon said, to which Matthew replied, “She did!”

He then explained, “Vida put in a few lines Sing 2. He plays a little pig diving in chocolate saying: ‘This is the best day of my life.’ ”

In addition to acting, Vida likes to express her creativity through art, and her father told PEOPLE in October 2020, “Vida really likes to paint and draw and likes graphic novels.”

On January 23, 2023, Camila shared a photo from Vidin’s 13th birthday party during a vacation the family took earlier that month. In the photo, teenage Vida is about to blow out the candles on her cake while “Uncle” Woody Harrelson stands behind her with a questioning expression on his face. “Uncle @woodyharrelson is questioning if the cake is vegan or not!!! 🫣😂,” Camila wrote in the caption. “How is this going people! Time flies… 13! You are my ray of sunshine Vida!!! Your name explains everything about your ‘life’.”

Livingston Alves McConaughey, 11

Livingston Alves McConaughey, the couple’s youngest child, was born on December 28, 2012.

In the YouTube series Mom2Mom, Camila got candid about the ups and downs of parenthood, admitting that her third child was initially smaller than her first two children.

“It was different with all my kids. My two oldest were so good. And my third came and he was a nightmare from day one,” she said in the video. “He was very, very attached to me. He would just have fits and cry. He wouldn’t get out of that phase until he was 4.”

She added: “I thought, ‘This was so hard. [Livingston]such is the problem.’ Now that he’s in the sweet phase, he’s come out of the dark side.”

Since outgrowing his mischievous phase, the now 11-year-old has developed his own creative interests. During an October 2020 interview with PEOPLE, Matthew said that Livingston and his siblings have become “pretty good storytellers,” adding that Livingston enjoys writing stories: “Our youngest will come up and tell us, ‘Oh, I’m on second chapter.’ ”

For his 10th birthday, Livingston’s only request was a trip to Altitude Trampoline Park in Austin and an ice cream cake, as his mom shared on Instagram. “May your heart, my son, keep its simplicity as you grow in this complicated world!! You challenge me and teach me everyday, for that I am grateful! What a blessing you are!” Camila wrote alongside a sweet photo of Livingston blowing out his birthday candles.

The following month, Matthew had some father-son time with Levi and Livingston, sharing photos of himself getting his youngest’s hair cut on Instagram while Levi and their dog looked on.
