News about Catrin Nye
I’m pleased to announce that my team and I have spent the last four weeks working with BBC Journalist Catrin Nye and the BBC Victoria Derbyshire Morning News and Current Affairs team to film the process of producing synth video content.
We produce moving images that “deeply parody” Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, and Jeremy Corbyn, the Opposition Leader, using different creative processes and a technical technique called Video Dialogue Replacement (VDR), which uses deep learning networks. and additional resources. software.
To draw attention to the fact that there are currently no rules or regulatory frameworks in place to limit the power of targeted disinformation campaigns online, my team is working on this project with London-based think tank Future Advocacy.
The resulting documentary was shown on BBC News at 10am on Tuesday 12 November and the shorter three minute version has since had over 500,000 views on Instagram alone.
For the last month, we have been recording every step of the process of creating synthesized video using VDR. This includes technical efforts, research, post-production, VFX, and creative scriptwriting. It also includes voice actor AV data recording.
My intent with this partnership was to make the process of creating this type of “deep fake” video content transparent. There is a lot of hype and concern about the potential effects of deep fake technologies on our democratic processes and I hope this project addresses some of those concerns in a sensible way by encouraging stricter regulation of the systemic problems we face with online disinformation campaigns. social. media platforms
Currently, deepfakes are not used in political campaigns, but similar technologies are used every day to subtly and uncontrollably influence public perception of current events on social media platforms and through targeted search engine advertising. like google.
The real threats to our democracy arise from the restrictions and lack of control over these powerful new forms of communication and influence, as evidenced by Parliament’s own committee’s conclusions on the effective use of targeted disinformation campaigns and the use of data. personals during the 2016 UK referendum and US election. in.
We launched this campaign because, with the start of new elections in the UK, little has changed to stop massive online disinformation efforts leading to undue influence and coercion. We want elected politicians to use the findings of parliament and protect our future elections.
