Chaka Khan Says She's 'Not Nostalgic' for the Past: 'I'm Just Busy with My Life'

Chaka Khan is not interested in living in the past.

The ten-time Grammy winner, 71, revealed her five decades in the music industry for a new one Harper’s Bazaar front page story, telling the paper that he doesn’t spend much time reflecting on his career.

“I’m not nostalgic at all,” said Khan, who shot to fame in the ’70s as the lead singer of the band Rufus. “I’m just busy with my life, and suddenly I’ve been doing this for 50 years.”

The “Ain’t Nobody” singer added that she “doesn’t count” the passing years. “I just live every day like everyone else, so I get surprised when birthdays come around. I think, ‘Oh, wow, tempus fugit,’ and I get on with it,” she said. “I really am following person.”

Khan, though, is aware of what she’s accomplished — and the fact that her fan base now spans generations, as many of her longtime listeners have passed her catalog down to their children.

“The beautiful thing is that throughout my career I’ve always had a lot of love,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said. “That’s maybe the highlight of what I do: the love I get from people.”

She added: “Now to see the daughters, granddaughters and grandsons of people who grew up with me fall in love with me, that’s really special for me. It’s always been a love fest with my audience and with me, and it still is.”

Looking at her career as a whole, Khan told the newspaper that she hopes to leave behind a “good and positive, loving” legacy – “one that brought joy and a little bit of enrichment to someone’s life, that was helpful to someone in some way , in a good way.”

The “Through the Fire” singer continued, “That’s all I can ask for. I can only pray that when it’s over, I’ve done as many good as possible to as many people as possible.”

Khan recently revealed one thing she doesn’t want people to talk about – that she’s the “Queen of Funk”. She said The Independent in June, “That’s funny! I’m forever trying to ditch that ‘funk’ thing. For. EVER! I hate being locked up, you know?”

In the new one Harper’s Bazaar story, she spoke about her ability to perform within numerous and unexpected genres. “I can do anything,” Khan declared. “I could sing Chinese folk music if I could pronounce it well.”
