Champions League giants confirm talks with Mason Greenwood as ex-Man Utd striker faces deadline over football future

The CHAMPIONS League giants have confirmed talks with Mason Greenwood following his sacking by Manchester United.

The transfer window closes at 11pm today, and the Red Devils seem to be in a race against time to offload the 21-year-old.

Mason Greenwood may have just been given a lifeline after being sacked by Manchester United

It was announced this morning that Greenwood has been thrown the last lifeline by Europe’s top club Lazio.

The now famous journalist Gianluca Di Marzio said that the Italian club is in talks with the striker.

He wrote on Twitter, now known as X: “Lazio in direct talks with Mason Greenwood’s camp.

“Lazio was informed that a free transfer could be made, with an annual salary of 700,000 euros.”

It came after Fabrizio Romano said Lazio were interested in signing Greenwood.

A prominent Italian football journalist claims that the club has been offered a striker.

He wrote: “Lazio have been offered the chance to sign Mason Greenwood from Man United in the closing hours of the summer transfer window.

“For now, no decision has been made.”

MailOnline also reported today that Getafe are reportedly interested in Greenwood moving to Spain on a short-term loan.

It comes after Turkish giants Besiktas are reportedly considering a loan move for the young striker.

Another Turkish club is also believed to be interested, and Turkey could be a more realistic destination as the Süper Liga transfer window deadline is not before September 15.

Greenwood has “mutually agreed” to leave United on August 21 following the backlash over his possible return to the team following his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault.

He was charged in October last year, but all charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Greenwood has not kicked a ball for Utd since January 2022 when he was suspended and this month it was decided it would be best for everyone if his future was outside of Old Trafford.

If United can’t find him a club, they could face paying his £75,000-a-week contract.

There are still two years left for that with an option for a further 12 months if the club wanted to accept it.

This would mean a payout of almost £8 million.
