Charissa Thompson Says She Would Occasionally Make Up Comments from Coaches During NFL Sideline Reports

Charissa Thompson admitted to sometimes making up comments from coaches while an NFL sideline reporter on Wednesday’s episode of the show Pardon My Take podcast.

“I’ve said it before, so I didn’t get fired for saying it, but I’ll say it again. Sometimes I’d make up a report because A., the coach didn’t come out at halftime or it was too late and I said, ‘I didn’t want to screw it up report,’ so I said, ‘I’m just going to make this up,'” Thompson, 41, said.

Thompson went on to express why she believes it won’t upset any coaches.

“No coach is going to get mad if I say, ‘Hey, we’ve got to stop getting hurt, we’ve got to be better on third down, we’ve got to stop turning the ball over and do a better job coming off the field.’ Like, they’re not going to correct me on that,” she added.

Thompson, who is now a Fox NFL kickoff presenter and host for Amazon’s Thursday night footballshe explained why she feels she is at a great point in her career.

“Kudos to Amazon for giving us the runway to be who we are,” she said. “I don’t need to tell you. You lived very well by being yourself and when your employer allows you to do so, the same at Fox, they always let me be who I am. Good, bad or indifferent.”

Thompson hopes viewers will see how “authentic” she and her fellow broadcasters are.

“We’re not polished,” she said. “I mean, there’s a time and a place to be professional, but at the end of the day, it’s football, it’s entertainment and it’s not that serious. So balancing information and entertainment is kind of a perfect 50/50 goal and that’s hopefully what we’re doing every week .”

Thompson also expanded her resume by hosting a podcast with Erin Andrews, Chill out with Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson.

In February, she revealed to PEOPLE what she appreciates most about working with Andrews (45).

“I think sometimes life has forced you to wear a tough exterior, but underneath that, when that exterior is removed, she’s one of the kindest and gentlest people I know,” she said. “Wherever I am in life, it could be 3 o’clock in the morning dropped on the side of the road, and she’s done it in a different situation, she’s like, ‘OK, I’m doing this, I’ve got this for you.’ She goes into full reactionary problem-solving mode. Erin is motherly love. She’s very motherly.”
