Charlie Puth Leads Arena Singalong of Friends Theme in Emotional Tribute to Matthew Perry — Watch

Charlie Puth paid tribute to the late Matthew Perry with a sentimental song on Sunday.

During his concert in Melbourne, Australia, the “Attention” singer, 31, paid tribute to the actor – who died on Saturday aged 54 – with a piano rendition of the iconic Friends theme tune.

In a clip shared on TikTok by a concertgoer, Puth played his cover of The Rembrandts hit as the Margaret Court Arena crowd sang along to the tune. Puth joined the crowd as he sang the song’s chorus before belting out the theme’s closing line, “Because you’re there for me too.”

He then began singing “See You Again,” his 2015 song with rapper Wiz Khalifa that was written in honor of actor Paul Walker after his death in 2013 and included in Furious 7 movie.

Puth’s tribute to Perry drew emotional reactions from fans. “And then he moves on to seeing you again?!? I would be on the floor sobbing,” one user wrote in the comments section.

“This gave me goosebumps all over. RIP Matthew Perry 🕊️,” another person commented, while someone else added, “I’m crying 😭 this is beautiful. RIP Matthew Perry.”

On Saturday, Perry was found dead in a jacuzzi after an alleged drowning at his home in Los Angeles.

“We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” Perry’s family said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE following his death. “Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and as a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”

Among his many roles, the actor was famously catapulted to stardom after playing Chandler Bing in the popular sitcom Friends from 1994 to 2004.

Puth used to talk about lifelong living Friends fan, with a special fondness for Perry on the show. In 2021, he suggested that he might play a character close to the late actor before HBO Max Friends reunion special aired.

“I could play Chandler’s long-lost son,” he said Hey! News in that time. – People think I’m very similar to him.

The “Mother” singer never met Perry, but he did meet the late actor Friends actress Jennifer Aniston on The Ellen Show 2019. In the same year, Puth also played against Friends star Courtney Cox in a ’90s sitcom quiz for Billboard.
