Cher and Son Elijah Blue Allman Agree to Temporarily Suspend Conservatorship in Private Mediation

Cher and her son Elijah Blue Allman have reached a temporary settlement amid their ongoing custody case.

On May 7, the legendary singer and Allman attended a private mediation session where both sides agreed to “pause all legal proceedings and related activities, including all discovery and motion practices, to allow the parties to continue to work together on a private and confidential resolution of this issue,” according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The decision comes months after Cher’s request for custody of her son was rejected by a judge in Los Angeles.

At the time, the “Believe” singer, 77, filed an emergency request to have Allman placed in temporary emergency care, claiming she was “fearful her son would not be alive in a year.”

Cher’s lawyers cited his treatment for schizoaffective disorder and revealed he had been placed in several 5150 holds — California’s legal code that allows a person with a mental illness to be involuntarily detained for 72-hour psychiatric hospitalization — over the past year.

They said: “Doctors have told Cher that if she doesn’t take this step like his mother, he will end up back on the streets.”

Ultimately, the judge ruled against the motion because Allman proved he had “managed his finances” and “had an apartment,” and because he had “stayed drug-free” after submitting to “several drug tests.”

The judge also said there was “insufficient evidence” to agree to temporary custody, as much of what they claimed was based on “fears” and hypotheticals.

“That in itself is not a basis for the court to appoint a guardian of the estate. To date, I have not seen evidence for the granting of temporary, emergency supervision,” the judge ruled.

Last month, Allman filed an objection and outlined his reasons why he believes the guardianship is unnecessary. He also said that if there is to be one, Cher is not entitled to the preference since he is married to Marieangela “Queeny” King, and considers Cher “unfit to serve.”

“I understand that guardianship is appropriate for a person who is unable to manage his own financial resources or resist fraud or undue influence,” he said, adding that he has “selected and retained preferred counsel for this matter” and retained an accounting firm to help manage his finances. .

“I am and have been capable of managing my own financial resources and resisting fraud and undue influence. I do not need guardianship,” he continued.

Allman also addressed Cher’s concerns about his mental health in the filing and asserted that while he struggles with addiction, he is “not mentally ill.”

The hearing, which was scheduled for June 11, has now been moved to September 13 so that Cher and Allman can continue to mediate the disputed issues.
