Cheryl Burke talks about it Dancing with the stars about the arrest of Artem Chigvintsev on suspicion of domestic violence.
On the August 30 episode of her podcast Sex, lies and spray tanning, Burke began, “I am reluctant to smile at the moment because of the current news…which has me in complete shock.”
After noticing that she “grew up” with Chigvintseva, she shared. “We used to live together at my family’s house in the Bay Area. It’s so shocking. I’m getting a little emotional. My heart goes out to everyone involved.”
“It’s just really hard for me because he was — he’s my family,” she added. “I don’t know what to say other than I hope everyone is okay.”

On the morning of Thursday, August 29, in Napa, California, Chigvintsev was taken into custody on a charge of corporal injury to a spouse – presumably Garcia, although this has not been confirmed. He was released on $25,000 bail later that day, and Garcia’s rep has since released a statement asking for privacy.
“This is a private matter and Nikki requests privacy for her and her family at this time,” it read.
His arrest came two days after the couple celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary with sweet posts on Instagram. In hers, Garcia shared a video montage of moments during their relationship, describing it in part with lyrics to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
“This song is our love story,” she wrote at the time. “I will never forget where I was when I asked Jesus about Artem. Conversation with Him and God. How my feelings felt too soon. Everything seemed too fast. And then this song was created. And then I knew that I was falling in love with him and that it was meant to be. 🙏🏼✨”
“Happy anniversary @theartemc I love you! ❤️🔥”, concluded the title.
Chigvintsev also posted, writing: “Happy anniversary my love, I can’t see my life without you. You are my everything ❤️”

The couple first met as partners on DWTS 2017, but Garcia was then engaged to John Cena. A year later they broke up and Garcia and Chigvintsev reconnected.
In 2020, they welcomed their son Matteo together, and married in Paris in 2022. Their relationship was sometimes volatile, with Total Bellas alum admitting she was estranged from her husband while she was a judge for AGT: Extreme was difficult.
“It was really hard for us,” she admitted, adding that things were “a little shaky,” but the two had “sexy FaceTimes” and were “stronger than ever.”
