Cheryl Burke Shares Her Advice for Celebrities Considering Dancing with the Stars: 'Be Single'

Cheryl Burke gives more insight into why romances abound Dancing with the Stars — especially between professional dancers and their celebrity partners.

“It’s an arranged marriage … And it’s black and white. You either love each other or you really hate each other,” the professional dancer, 40, said on the May 31 episode of her podcast, Sex, lies and spray tanningwhen asked by her guest, PEOPLE senior editor Dave Quinn, why she thinks so many people on the show are having fun and dating.

Burke went on to note that celebrity contestants’ relationships with their dance partners tend to be either extreme love or extreme loathing due to the amount of time they spend together if they are dedicated to the competition.

She also said that celebrities have to be “vulnerable,” something that could be completely new for stars who are used to acting or being loyal to a certain brand all the time.

“It’s so intimate and you’re stuck with that person…you better at least try to do it,” she said, after naming the former celebrity contestant who admitted he fell in love with his dance partner even though they were both married in that time and the relationship did not progress.

“You bond in so many ways. These celebrities are so vulnerable because to make it you have to bare everything. And that’s it? I bet most of these married celebrities have never done that with their [partners]Burke said.

“Be single if you do Dancing with the stars. That’s all, I’m saying – Burke said towards the end of the conversation.

Burke was a dancer on the competitive reality show for 26 seasons before officially retiring in 2022.

She is also not the first person to talk about the temptation of passion that the show inspires in people.
