Chrissy Teigen Says She ‘Didn’t Know’ She Was Having an Abortion with Late Son Jack

Chrissy Teigen opens up about her late-term miscarriage experience.

Teigen, 38, shared her story while speaking at a rally in support of Arizona’s abortion rights initiative, Proposition 139, in Phoenix on Sunday, October 27.

During her speech, she said she “didn’t know” she had miscarried in 2020 when she lost her son Jack after pregnancy complications.

In a video of her speech shared by CNN, Teigen recalled her pregnancy with Jack “going bad,” leading her to have a life-saving miscarriage that she initially thought was a miscarriage.

“One thing that was difficult for me was that I never felt any pain from it so I didn’t think of it as anything other than an abortion,” she said. “We hear the word abortion, we think there’s some kind of pain associated with it…nowhere in the hospital when I was getting the blood transfusion did I even think that I was in danger of losing this baby because I wasn’t in any pain.”

John Legend opens up about wife Chrissy Teigen’s heartbreaking late-term miscarriage: ‘Her life was in danger’

Teigen continued, “There’s such a stigma around the word abortion. No one wants to say abortion… I didn’t even know I had it. And that was so embarrassing to admit in front of the whole world.”

The cookbook author then shared the moment she realized she had miscarried while talking to her husband John Legend when Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.

“I remember it happening and looking at John saying, ‘It’s so terrible what these people have to go through and this choice they have to make. It’s so scary for them.’ And then he said, ‘for you, for us,'” Teigen recalled.

Pregnant Chrissy Teigen says losing her son Jack was actually the abortion that saved her life

“I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He says, ‘You had a miscarriage.’ … And I said, ‘No way. Really? No way.’ That day, I had an idea,” she continued. “I realized that very day that if I didn’t know the language around this and I didn’t know what was going on with my body, how could other people possibly empathize with our situation and our scenario?”

Teigen — who shares Luna, 8, Miles, 6, Esti, 20 months, and Wren, 15 months, with Legend, 45 — concluded that she hopes to amplify the voices of those who have gone through similar experiences and help spread the message that ” abortion is health care.”

Teigen’s appearance at the rally comes after her husband Legend shared more heartbreaking details about the loss of their son Jack on the Wednesday, Oct. 23, episode of Club Shay Shay podcast.

“My wife, she was past 15 weeks when she had to miscarry,” Legend told host Shannon Sharpe. “She miscarried and she was bleeding and all these things were happening… Her life was in danger.”

Teigen experienced a partial placental abruption at 20 weeks, which means the placenta separated from the uterine wall prematurely. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition can be life-threatening for both the fetus and the mother.
