Corrie’s Christmas special saw long-standing character Peter Barlow, played by Chris Gascoyne, leave the Cobbles for good.
Changing viewing habits have seen these numbers for major soap operas steadily decline over the years.
The most watched program on Monday was the King’s Christmas Broadcast, with a total of 7.4 million viewers across all channels at its peak.
The Christmas special of Strictly Come Dancing attracted 5.6 million viewers, while 5.2 million people watched the animated version of Julia Donaldson’s Tabby McTatt.
Meanwhile, Michael McIntyre’s Christmas Wheel was seen by 4.8 million, while Doctor Who was watched by 4.7 million
Call the Midwife was watched by 4.6 million people, Toy Story 4 had 3.7 million viewers and The 1% Club quiz 3.5 million.
