Career of Christopher Columbus
The Bahamas, then known as San Salvador, were discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first expedition in 1492. He claimed that he could subdue the Indians living there with 50 men. In 1493, Columbus made his last voyage to the Americas and also explored the northeast coast of Cuba. At the beginning of 1493, after returning to Castille, he set off with 17 ships and 1,500 soldiers on his second campaign. Before anchoring in Mariagalante, Columbus stopped at an island he named Dominica. Columbus made a second successful expedition, during which he brought over 500 slaves to Spain and sold many of the natives into slavery. On his third expedition, which he set out on in May 1498, he explored Venezuela, Trinidad and other places.
Columbus was imprisoned for six weeks before being released when King Ferdinand learned of his tyranny and incompetence. In 1502, he started his fourth expedition and headed to Central America. He spent two months traveling through Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. Before the King of Spain rescued them in 1504, Columbus and his crew remained in Jamaica. In November, he returned to Sanlucar, Spain.
Trips to America
In 1492, the first Columbus expedition ended. Instead of reaching Japan as planned, he reached the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador. In total, Columbus made four voyages during which he extensively circumnavigated the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas, as well as the mainland, visiting locations such as Panama.
America was not first colonized by Christopher Columbus. Leif Ericson’s Nordic mission was one of the earlier successful expeditions. Columbus, however, was the first to see the continent and establish permanent settlements. Over the next 400 years, Columbus’s expeditions and reports inspired all the major European nations to want to colonize parts of the Americas.
Columbus was a skilled navigator who had a great deal of faith in the potential of exploration. In his journal entries, he wrote that his steely determination kept the group together when they thought they would never make it to land.
His dictatorial leadership style, however, caused conflict on the ships he commanded. Columbus was a devout Christian, and sailors who had a more grounded and pragmatic view of life did not appreciate his tendency to be hypocritical and critical of others’ faults. He was religious in certain ways, but he also held to the then-common belief that European Christians had moral superiority because they adhered to the one true faith. Although Columbus curbed some of the greatest excesses of his crew, he brought back human slaves.
Columbus was appointed viceroy and governor of the Indies on the island of Hispaniola by the Spanish monarchs as part of the treaty. He also gave his brothers the authority to serve as regents. But in 1500, Columbus was arrested and put in chains under the command of the Spanish monarchy. The administration of the new colonies was accused of being inefficient, disobedient and using barbaric methods. Columbus and his brothers were released from prison after a few weeks, but Columbus was no longer allowed to serve as governor of Hispaniola.
Columbus developed stronger religious beliefs as he neared death. He was particularly fascinated by biblical prophecies and wrote his own “Book of Prophecies” (1505). He was also unhappy with his lack of popularity and what seemed to be his inferiority in the eyes of the Spanish kings. He addressed the kings in a letter in 1503 and expressed his feeling of an unrecognized victim.
At the age of 54, Columbus died in 1506 of a heart attack caused by reactive arthritis. Undoubtedly, Columbus’s health was impaired by the harshness of his sea voyage. He was often in physical agony from his travels at the end of his life.
Many European Americans hold Columbus in high esteem as a person who contributed to the globalization of America. In Spain and North and South America, October 12 is recognized as Columbus Day. Some take a more pessimistic perspective on Columbus, arguing that his so-called “discovery” was not really a discovery because the area was previously inhabited and that his activities resulted in the abuse and genocide of the Native Americans who already lived there by subsequent European colonization.
