Khalid Kamau News
On Saturday, a mayor in Georgia was taken into custody and charged with burglary and criminal trespassing, allowing one of the five municipal council members who had sued the mayor this year to temporarily take his place. Khalid Kamau, the mayor of South Fulton in metro Atlanta, was charged with burglary in the first degree and criminal trespass. He was released the following day after posting $11,000 in bail bonds.
He was also required to undergo a mental health assessment, according to Atlanta’s NBC affiliate WXIA. The police department requested more information on Sunday, but the city’s head of public affairs declined, citing a “ongoing investigation.”
Interim director of public affairs Jacqueline Howell stated that “the City of South Fulton is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their position, are subject to the same fair and just treatment.” The incident report was asked for from the city’s public records office on Sunday.
An email addressed to Kamau’s chief of staff on Sunday did not immediately elicit a response from the official city email account. On Saturday, Kamau wrote on Facebook that he felt “good” and “free.”
“God is still using me. Keep a lookout, he advised. Kamau also cited a passage from the Bible that discussed “those who are persecuted because of righteousness.”
According to WXIA, Natasha Williams-Brown, a councilwoman and the mayor pro tem, will take over as acting mayor from Kamau. She told the station that even once she becomes mayor, things in the city will continue as usual. She declared, “I will carry out any formal responsibilities as the acting mayor up until Mayor Khalid resumes his duties.
Williams-Brown and four other council members launched a lawsuit in March to have Kamau fired. Only two of the council members were not parties to the lawsuit, according to court records. Kamau is suspected of recording secret executive sessions, according to a story published at the time by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
For more than a year, there has been tension between Kamau and the council. The charges Kamau made on a city-issued credit card that were discovered during an audit were brought to the council’s attention in June 2022, and the council asked the district attorney’s office to look into them.
He asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into the City Council for possible malfeasance the following month, according to WXIA.
