Chuck Todd News

Chuck Todd, the longtime host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” announced to the audience Sunday that he is stepping down. The role will be filled by co-worker Kristen Welker, who often attends the Sunday broadcast.

Welker, who has been at NBC News since 2010, will serve as Todd’s co-anchor on election nights beginning in 2021, according to a note from NBC News editorial president Rebecca Blumenstein and NBC News senior vice president of politics Carrie Budoff Brown.

When Todd took over “Meet the Press,” it was a Sunday show that many people doubted could still be relevant in today’s media environment, Todd noted on the show. Well, I think we’ve more than adequately answered that question.

The document states that Todd took over as the show’s moderator in September 2014 and held it through two presidential election cycles. However, it’s crucial that media personalities don’t “overstay” as Todd put it on the show.

Todd admitted, “I let my job consume me for almost 30 years.” Having seen far too many friends and family let their work consume them before it was too late, I made a commitment to my family not to. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up before 5 or 6 in the morning.

Todd will continue to work for NBC and take on a new role as the network’s top political commentator. According to NBC, he will focus on extensive reporting and will continue to host “Chuck Toddcast” and “Meet the Press Reports.”

According to the memo, Todd “will maintain his role as the leading political voice at NBC News, both on the ground and at major events.”

“I’ve had the privilege of working with (Welker) since day one and let me tell you, he’s the right person at the right time,” Todd said.

Todd reiterated the duty of political journalists to present facts, not cultivate a brand, saying he was leaving at a time when he was concerned about “this moment in history.”

Todd observed, “You’re doing this job wrong if you’re doing it to gain popularity. “I view partisan attacks as flattery. And when partisans give sincere praise, I take them with a grain of salt.” He stressed that the main Sunday show will “never” accept propagandists.
