Cissy Houston on the Heartbreak of Outliving Daughter Whitney Houston: 'Still Wonder If I Could Have Saved Her Somehow'

After Whitney Houston’s death in 2012, her mother Cissy Houston wondered if there was anything she could have done differently to save her life.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2013 about his revealing memoir, Remembering WhitneyCissy reflected on the star’s tragic death.

“I think I was a great mother and I still wonder if I could have somehow saved her. I think why not. Why wouldn’t I? I still wish she was here,” Cissy, who died on 10/7 at 91. year, he said then.

“Yes, I wish I could have saved her. I’m sorry that she had to die alone and in such a state or predicament. It really made me very sad and hurt,” she added.

Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston’s mother and Grammy-winning singer, has died at 91.

Cissy concluded: “Who knows what the course is about, where you’re going in life. Life is really crazy and funny. You go one way, sometimes it’s good. Another way, sometimes it’s bad. You don’t know. You don’t know I don’t know until it’s too late, because if I could have saved my daughter in any way, I could have helped her.

In her memoir, Cissy wrote candidly about Whitney’s addiction and the downward spiral that led to her death by drowning in a hotel bathtub with traces of cocaine still in her body.

Cissy said at the time that it was “very hard” for her to see her daughter struggling.

“No one was born by a woman who says, ‘I want my daughter to be a drug addict,'” she said. “I did everything I could that I thought was right. Some kids listen and some don’t. Most of them don’t, and they come across something they can’t deal with, and most of the time they don’t talk to their parents about it. ”

Cissy died at her home in New Jersey while under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease, her daughter-in-law Pat Houston confirmed.

She continued: “Her contributions to popular music and culture are unparalleled. We are blessed and grateful that God allowed her to spend so many years with us and we are grateful for all the many valuable life lessons she taught us. May she rest in peace, with her daughter , Whitney and granddaughter Bobbi Kristina and other cherished family members.”

Cissy, who won two Grammy Awards in her singing career, was also the aunt of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick.
