Once upon a time, I regularly tested and reviewed fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other tech wearables. I even wrote for a Finnish health technology company that made a sleep tracking ring, Oura. That gig ended in 2019, but I continued to wear the Oura Ring.
I recently got a notification from the app that I’ve been wearing it for five and a half years, so it’s safe to say I’ve spent enough time with the device to offer a thorough review. Over the years, this has led to results that I can actually see and feel.

What initially interested me was the level of detail the ring provides and its actionable suggestions. Within the three daily results (activity, sleep and readiness) are precise details about heart rate, breathing, temperature and more. By poking around the app and reading about features like heart rate variability, resting heart rate, and deep sleep, I learned about changes I could make to rest better, wake up refreshed, and reach my activity goals.
What kept me engaged was seeing my daily habits add up, literally. When I started wearing the Oura ring, I was living in Los Angeles and was unaware of how sedentary my lifestyle had become. My average activity score was 61. This immediately motivated me to walk around Echo Park Lake and through the trails of Elysian Park to meet my daily goals. Now my average activity score is 78.

I also realized how much my sleep was affected by eating and drinking too close to bed. In the morning I saw that my heartbeat had been racing all night and the sleep I was getting was not restorative. I became more intentional about finishing my food and alcohol a few hours before bed and was able to lower my resting heart rate by five beats per minute and prolong my deep sleep by 41 minutes.
Ultimately, I found it to be a useful tool to keep a better eye on my daily habits. It encourages me to see how small steps contribute to better health and it motivates me along the way.
Oura ring Gen3 Horizon in silver

I have a silver Oura Ring Gen3 in the horizon style, a traditional round ring shape. It also comes in a style called balance, which has a flat tip opposite the ring’s sensors, so you know you always have it perfectly aligned. Both the Horizon and Balance styles come in six colors, including black, gold and rose gold.
The ring size is not the same as standard jewelry, so you should order a sizing kit first. It comes with all eight sizes of Oura ring, so you can find a finger you like wearing it on and see how it feels for at least 24 hours as fingers can swell due to temperature, exercise and other factors.
Now is a good time to check out the Oura Ring for yourself since the Gen3 model is on sale on Amazon for Black Friday. Even better? You can buy it with HSA/FSA funds. Keep scrolling for more Black Friday tech deals from Amazon.
