News about Clive James
Australian writer and presenter Clive James, 80, known for his witty humour, has died. The author and critic, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, wrote movingly about his incurable disease in the last years of his life.
Vivian James, who moved to England after he was born in 1961, became known for her work as a television commentator and literary critic. She later made sarcastic comments on world television on shows like Clive James On Television. She introduced humorous and unusual TV clips into the show, mainly from the Japanese game Endurance.
He died Sunday at his Cambridge home, according to a statement from his representatives. A private funeral was held on Wednesday in the Pembroke College chapel. The statement says Clive died a month after he last laid down his pen and nearly ten years after receiving the initial fatal diagnosis from him.
He endured his many ailments with patience and joy because he knew, to the very end, that he had seen more than his fair share on this ‘great and good planet’. He expressed his gratitude to the staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for their compassion and care, which unexpectedly freed him up more time.
To pass away peacefully and at home, surrounded by loved ones and books, his family thanks the nurses on the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home team.
One of many who paid tribute to the man she called a “bright, bright kid” was singer Alison Moyet. Former tabloid editor Piers Morgan called him a “brilliantly funny man” and TV presenter Gaby Roslin called him “incredibly kind”.
Actor Samuel West commented: “We were lucky to have him for so long after his diagnosis.” “We were lucky to have him.” Eric Idle, a member of the Monty Python comedy troupe, mourned the death of “dear Clive James, my friend in Cambridge.”
The Rev. Richard Coles called him “the greatest television critic that ever lived,” and Margarita Pracatan, the popular Cuban singer James helped found, praised him for his “intelligence, talent, and beautiful lifestyle.”
Along with the writer’s favorite country honours, the Australian High Commissioner to the UK George Brandis hailed James as “undoubtedly the greatest Australian poet of his time”.
BBC Director General Tony Hall described the “indispensable” James as a “smart, witty and provocative broadcaster”. He had a wide variety of talents, and everything he did was essential to listen to or watch,” Lord Hall concluded.
