Colman Domingo Jokes Delayed Third Season of High School Drama Euphoria Will Be Set in a ‘Nursing Home’ (Exclusive)

Euphoria guest star Colman Domingo envisions a much different environment for the students of East Highlands High School when the delayed third season of the heavy-hitting drama finally returns to HBO in 2025.

“It’s going to take place in a nursing home in Southeast Los Angeles,” jokes Domingo, 54, who plays Ali, a struggling 12-step sponsor for recovering addict Rue (played by Emmy-winning star Zendaya).

Almost two years after the second season of the acclaimed series ended on February 27, 2022, Domingo confirms that the third season will begin filming this year.

But beyond that detail, Domingo — who won an Emmy in 2022 for his performance — tells PEOPLE, “I can’t share anything.” That’s partly because he hasn’t read any scripts. “I haven’t seen anything, but I know Sam is very excited about it,” he says of creator Sam Levinson.

At the end of season 2, Euphoria ended with young Ashtray (Javon Walton) being killed in a shootout with the police. Drug dealer Fez (Angus Cloud) is also shot – potentially fatally – while begging his adopted younger brother to surrender.

Cloud died of an accidental drug overdose in August. How he will be removed from the series is not yet known, but Domingo says his death is a “significant loss” for those who loved him.

“He was a young man who struggled, but he was such a bright light. He truly was. People say that about people all the time, but this was true. He was kind, he was warm and he just had a spark,” Domingo continues.

As for the other characters, Rue stayed sober “for the rest of the school year,” she said in a voiceover. “I wish I could say it was a decision I made, in a way, it was just easier. I don’t know if this feeling will last forever, but I’m trying.”

Her relationship with ex Jules (Hunter Schafer) remains in question, as does Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) position with friend Maddie (Alexa Demie) and ex-lover Nate (Jacob Elordi), who dumped her at the end of the season.

Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat, announced in 2022 that she would not be returning for the third season, which she later told Dax Shepard on his Armchair expert podcast: “I don’t think there was room for [Kat] to go.”
