Company Behind Taylor Swift’s Shows in Brazil Under Investigation After Fan’s Death

Officials in Rio de Janeiro have launched an investigation into the company behind Taylor Swift’s show in Brazil.

The news of the investigation into Time for Fun comes days after Ana Clara Benevides Machado, a 23-year-old fan of the artist, died before her performance at the Estádio Nilton Santos on Friday.

According to NBC News, Rio de Janeiro’s Civil Police Division of Consumer Delegations is investigating an alleged “crime of danger to life or health” by the company. The media reported that the organizers of the event were expected to be called to testify and that authorities had begun taking additional steps “to investigate the facts”.

Brazilian newspaper Estadão he explained that the authorities will “investigate everything reported by fans, such as the structure of the venue and the availability of water”. PEOPLE has reached out to Time for Fun for comment.

On the day of Benevides Machado’s death, temperatures topped 102 F, according to PBS.org. Due to the heat wave, Swift canceled Saturday’s performance due to “extreme temperatures in Rio”.

The concert was moved to Monday, and the singer wrote that “the safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers and crew must and will always come first.”

While Benevides Machado’s cause of death has not been released, Time For Fun shared in a social media post written in Portuguese that the concertgoer was not feeling well at the scene and was treated by emergency services before being taken to Salgado Filho Hospital, where she died .

While talking to a Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Pauloher father, Weiny Machado, expressed his desire for clarification on whether fans were prohibited from bringing water to the show after fan-made videos showed Swift pausing the concert and asking for water to be brought to the crowd.

“I lost my only daughter, a happy and intelligent girl. She was supposed to graduate in psychology next April, saving money. I have no words to express my pain. She left home to fulfill a dream and came back dead,” he told the outlet. Entertainment Time announced on social media before the postponement of Saturday’s show that water pumps would be installed in the stadium.

While sharing the news of Benevides Machado’s death on her Instagram Story, Swift wrote that she was “overwhelmed with grief when I even try to talk about it.”

“Now I want to say that I feel this loss deeply and my heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” she wrote.
