Congressman Dan Kildee’s Brother Shot to Death, Nephew in Custody, Sheriff Says

Timothy Kildee, the brother of Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee, was fatally shot Tuesday morning in Genesee County, Michigan, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said at a news conference.

Timothy, 57, was allegedly shot by his 27-year-old son at his home in Vienna Township, Mich. The unnamed suspect is currently in police custody.

He could be charged with “one count of open murder, one count of carjacking, one count of armed robbery, one count of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and possibly a motor vehicle violation for the accident,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said. at the press conference.

Rep. Kildee, 65, was notified of the shooting by Swanson and is currently returning to Michigan from Washington, DC

“Our family is saddened and heartbroken. There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy. I thank the community for respecting my family’s privacy during this very difficult time,” the Democratic lawmaker wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Police were first called to a domestic dispute in Burton, Michigan around 2:50 a.m. in the 3500 block of Columbine Street. Swanson said there was a “gun presented” during the verbal altercation.

After the conflict, Timothy’s son left the house “on foot” and contacted his mother (who is Timothy’s ex-wife). “Sometime between then and a little after five o’clock this morning. His mother picked him up and brought him back to his father,” Swanson said.

While they were walking towards Timothy’s home in the municipality of Vienna, the 27-year-old “jumped out of the moving vehicle”. The parents then went in search of their son.

Later, the father returned to the house alone, and the other son, who was sleeping in Timothy’s home, reported it to the authorities. “A family member on the other side of the basement heard the argument,” Swanson said. “And a comment was made [by the suspect] o ‘Give me your wallet and your keys.’” The wallet and keys were then found on the suspect after the incident.

The other son then told authorities he heard a gunshot, which Swanson says is believed to be the shot that killed the victim.

The 27-year-old suspect then allegedly took the victim’s car and fled the scene at high speed. Eight minutes after the shooting, the suspect crashed into another car.

The suspect sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital and remains under police guard at the hospital. The other two people in the other vehicle are “okay” with “minor injuries.”

Swanson said the investigation is ongoing, and Leyton said no charges have been filed. It is suspected that the 27-year-old may be abusing substances, which will be confirmed by toxicology reports, according to Leyton.

“The suspect’s behavior suggests to anyone that there was some sort of breakdown and/or other complications that caused him to be so violent,” Swanson said.
