Crazy Rich Asians Reunion! Constance Wu and Awkwafina Share a Smile at Little Shop of Horrors Celebration

Constance Wu and Awkwafina had one Crazy rich Asians reunion over the weekend.

The two former stars were back together on the red carpet Sunday, embracing and smiling for photographers in celebration of the 1,000th performance of the hit Off-Broadway revival of Little shop of horrors.

Wu, 41, currently stars in the production as Audrey, opposite Seymour Corbin Bleu. Awkwafina, 35, was in the matinee audience at New York’s Westside Theater to support Wu before joining her at Bryant Park Grill for a post-show celebration.

Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, has remained close to Wu ever since Crazy rich Asians‘ 2018 edition Appears on Good morning America in May, the comedian even said she hopes to make a sequel to the fantasy film to work with Wu and the rest of the cast again. “It would be so meaningful,” she explained. “They’re like my family, and it’s been so long. We’d love to get everyone back together.”

Sunday was actually a gathering night for Awkwafina. She attended the performance with her Nora from Queens costar Lori Tan Chinn, and even posed at a party with Small store by composer Alan Menken — with whom she worked on this year’s live adaptation of the film Little Mermaid.

Other stars in attendance on Sunday included Jenny Han, Alyah Chanel Scott, Chris Olsen, Andrew Barth Feldman and Chike Okonkwo.

Jonathan Groff and Skylar Astin, two Seymour exes, and Audrey Joy Woods’ ex also stopped by.

Little shop of horrors is based on the 1960 film of the same name. Both tell the story of a down-on-his-luck florist named Seymour who helps his boss turn around the plant business when he discovers a rare (and voracious) plant. He named the mysterious greenery Audrey II, after his work colleague and longtime crush Audrey.

Menken, 74, and the late Howard Ashman — who died in March 1991 at age 40 of an HIV/AIDS positive diagnosis — adapted the film for the stage, writing the score (Menken music and Ashman, lyrics). Ashman also wrote a book about the series.

The musical originally premiered in New York in 1982, before transferring to the Off-Broadway Orpheum Theatre, where it ran for five years.

It is followed by a 1986 film adaptation directed by Frank Oz starring Rick Moranis and the original Aubrey Ellen Greene. It became a cult classic and helped increase the popularity of community theater and high school productions Small store for decades to come.

A Broadway production finally arrived in 2003, starring Kerry Butler and Hunter Foster. It was closed almost a year later, after 40 previews and 372 performances.

The current Off-Broadway revival — directed by Michael Mayer — debuted in 2019, starring Tammy Blanchard and Groff as Audrey and Seymour. Since then, Lena Hall, Maude Apatow and Woods have alternated in the roles of Audrey, while a number of stars have taken on the role of Seymour, including Astin, Gideon Glick, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Rob McClure and Matt Doyle.

Constance Wu Says Off-Broadway ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Is ‘Like Coming Home’ (Exclusive)

Wu and Bleu, 34, began their performances on September 26. PEOPLE first announced its cast selection last month. Tony nominees Bryce Pinkham and Brad Oscar also star, as the respectable roles of Dr. Orin Scrivell and Mr. Mushnik.

Small store has been my favorite musical since I was a kid and I saw it in a local theater production in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia,” Wu previously told PEOPLE while doing the show, noting that nothing surprised her in the rehearsal process. “I’ve been obsessed ever since. , so I arrived with the knowledge of the series as a super-fan.”

Bleu also praised the PEOPLE series, calling it a “perfect series” that “really doesn’t get old.”

“I’m so proud to see diversity flourish on stage,” Bleu, 34, told PEOPLE. “We have a black Seymour and an Asian Audrey. It’s been great building the relationship between our characters. It’s only going to continue to grow as we play together up there.”
