When he was a middleweight at 93 kg, he competed for the Pride Fighting Championship. Dan Henderson was born on August 24, 1970 as Daniel Jeffery Henderson in Downey, California, USA. He was born along with his brother Tom Henderson, and their father, Bill Henderson, was one of their high school wrestling coaches. He grew up in Apple Valley, California, and started wrestling at a young age.

Career

Henderson began his wrestling career in high school, competing at the championships in 1987 and 1988. He competed at the NCAA Championships in 1993. He won the varsity championships in 1991, 1993 and 1994. He was also a senior national champion in 1993, 1994 and in 1997

He represented the United States at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. He also competed in two World Wrestling Championships in 1994 and 1997, finishing 12th and 7th, respectively. He was the wrestling coach at Cerritos College in the 1990s. After losing at the 2000 Olympics and trialing for the World Team in 2001, he decided to pursue an MMA career.

Henderson began training in mixed martial arts (MMA) in 1997, and won his first at the Brazil Open tournament. He competed in his second UFC tournament and defeated champions such as Allan Goes and Carlos Newton. His third tournament was Rings: King of Kings, where he won five out of 32 fights.

He joined the Pride Fighting Championship in late 2000 and won the welterweight title in 2005. On September 8, 2007, he returned to the UFC to compete for the heavyweight title. In December 2009, he signed a four-fight contract with Strikeforce, but was defeated by Jake Shields. He managed to defeat other champions in his next matches.
