Carvey and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, said Dex died of an accidental drug overdose
Dana Carvey’s older son, Dex Carvey, died Wednesday, the actor said. Dex was 32 years old.
In a statement posted on Instagram Thursday, Carvey, 68, and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, announced that Dex had passed away Wednesday night.
“We suffered a terrible tragedy last night,” the post began.
The parents said their beloved son died of an “accidental drug overdose.”
“Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented in many things – music, art, filmmaking, comedy – and he was passionate about all of them,” they said. “It’s no exaggeration to say that Dex loved life.”

“And when you were with him, you loved life too,” their statement continued. “He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends, and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Dex was a wonderful person. His handmade birthday cards are a real treasure. We will miss him forever.”

They concluded the post by recognizing others who might face similar difficulties.
“To anyone struggling with addiction or those who love someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers. Dana & Paul.”
Carvey later posted a photo of his son on Instagram and x, formerly known as Twitter. “F— tabloids. This is my boy,” he wrote. In another Instagram tribute to his son, Carvey shared a picture of the two working together. “What a joy,” he added.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Dex died at his home.
Dex followed Carvey into comedy and opened his father’s 2016 Netflix special A real white man. He also starred in Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser and Funster2013 series featuring his father.
Carvey and Zwagerman, who married in 1983, are also parents to a son, Thomas Carvey, 30.
